Should the NFL change the rules for pass interference on underthrown passes?

I've seen a lot of folks talking about this, including Mitchell Schwartz. The thought is that it rewards the QB for making a bad throw and it's impossible for DB's to defend when the WR purposefully uses it to get the call.

What do you think?

I also don't agree with an automatic 1st down for defensive holding. A 5 yard penalty should not be an automatic 1st down regardless of distance to go. Currently, it feels like everything besides an offsides is an automatic 1st down.

Then again, the last season and a half we've seen improvements in NFL defense. Scoring has gone down. I doubt the league changes anything as a result.

I can see that for sure. But on 3rd down and 4th down, you're still rewarded for playing good defense and punished for fouling.

It's ****ed up that a DB is required to turn his head and locate the ball to avoid a PI call, but when he does the receiver can simply hit the brakes in front of the DB and draw a PI call anyway. Completely stupid. That should be considered the WR initiating contact, and should be a no-call.

I've never understood calling a penalty on a DB who isn't turning for the ball. As long as he's not running through the WR or doing anything to actually interfere with the catch process...then who gives a **** if he didn't turn his head but sticks his arms up?

Perhaps, but it’s still an under thrown ball. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad Buffalo lost, but it’s still ridiculous the way PIs are currently called.

My understanding is he can stick his arms up, but can't even graze the WR if he doesn't turn his head.

If you're playing man, you really aren't supposed to turn and find the ball until the absolute last minute if you can. Just play thru the WR, but gotta stay in phase.

Not sure why that matters. Catching imperfect throws is a valid skill in WRs. Should we say that only perfect throws can be completed?

Defenses wouldn’t allow it to continue, switching to a zone keeps the eyes towards the LOS/QB rather than man to man where a defender will end up with his back turned. At the end of the day the CB needs to cover better and he won’t end up running into a WR that obviously already beat him on the play naturally.

Sounds familiar.

This seems like a sensible approach to me

Isn't that arguably OPI? The defender should be entitled to their space too. Not much different from a pick play.

In general, maybe. In the Jeudy play, definitely not. The CB runs into him, not the other way around.

Not running the same cover zero blitz two plays in a row is a good place to start.
