Of course Alex Smith missed a bunch of games before the last 2 years.

Want to know why? Go take a look at all the pathetic OL's he had from 2005-2011.
Hell he had 2 first round rookies in 2010 but Anthony Davis was getting owned like no other his first year. I still remember Tamba bitching slapping him and Shaun Smith squeezing his grapes as the icing on the cake on the route at Arrowhead.

Never seen a rookie get owned so bad in one game.

This OL is going to be much better. It's gonna be tough for pass rushers to get around the edge to sack the QB with Albert and Fisher as our bookends.

And I can see why Harbaugh wanted a big, strong, athletic QB on his team. His OL as a whole is very overrated in pass protection.

We could have gotten similar production and without giving up 2 2nd second round picks that could have made the team even better. Can you imagine the defense with Arthur Brown as the MLB next to DJ? Or add Robert Woods to WR core?

What better options did we have for week 1, besides someone with (his stats the previous two seasons), and with two years left on his deal?

Other than having paid a premium price in draft picks for him, it seems low/no risk. What else were we going to do?

If we absolutely had to have someone's trash, I would have targeted Cousins and picked up Barkley or Smith in the draft. And yes, I will "crown him" after a game like that.

These guys will pick up a QB in round one late or round 2(moving up)one of these days, but god DAMN I'm tired of waiting for it.

Alot of the arguments being made for Alex Smith are basically the same made for Cassel in 09. "Who else was out there", "Can hit the ground running" etc.

Now, just as then, those reasons weren't necessarily wrong. Trading for Cassel, at the time of the trade, wasn't the mistake. The contract, sticking with him etc was the big mistake, (some here knew it was a mistake at the time, which it turned out to be, but for what we needed, it wasn't as bad).

Trading for Alex Smith isn't the problem. Giving up what we gave up, isn't really the problem, although I think it was probably too much, but it is what it is.

But for all the reasons they made the move for him to be right, they have to win now. There isn't/shouldn't be a learning curve in terms of QB development. Systematically and philosophically is a different story, but even that, Smith is supposed to be an intelligent quick learning QB who's in his prime RIGHT NOW.

And using Smith's last two years to show he is this or that, is a little misleading. In terms of Harbaughs system, he was a really good fit in what Harbaugh wanted him to do and he did it well. Here and now, he's not going to be asked to do that in that way anymore, if history shows us anything in terms of coaches and what Andy Reid will do.

So the last 2 years, while Smith was good, don't necessarily show that what he will do here will be the same, worse, or better. I think he has the physical ability to be good in Reid's system, but up to this point in his career, when in that type of offense, he hasn't shown that he can be.

I'm hoping the confidence from the last 2 years will allow him to be better in a pass first system, where things are more on him than they were in SF.

Was Cousins even being shopped?

Obviously, nobody in the league was high on Barkley or Smith. It's not to say that would have been wrong in the end, but everyone else in the league had the same read on those two, they would be projects and/or longshots... not guys you could expect to take over this year or next.

If you look at Buffalo, the Jets, and the Eagles' QB moves, they are desperation/flyer type moves and not "this is our guy" type moves.

I don't think that picking up Smith with 2 years to go, giving us both next year and the year after to draft a QB with starting potential if Smith doesn't work out, was a bad option given the availability of short straws only this offseason.

Despite being so needy at QB, the Jets couldn't see themselves picking Geno Smith until their 3rd pick of the draft. I don't think we can see that as a ringing endorsement of their confidence in his abilities.
