Why people are disappointed: Exhibit A - Talent Evaluation

Since there seems to be several myths, excuses and some flat-out lies about why some folks are pissed off about this team right now, I thought I'd put together a few threads explaining, as clearly as I can, where people are coming from.

One of the bigger excuses is the infamous, "Pioli inherited a shitty team."

Let me make this clear: I do not disagree.

However, that doesn't excuse the Executive of the Decade for the team being no better now than it was this time last year - and you could make an argument that it is worse.

And one of the reasons why this team still sucks is simple:

The Executive of the Decade missed BADLY on talent evaluation.

I just spent a few minutes researching the transactions Pioli has made since taking the job, and it's even worse than I originally thought.

Counting draft picks, trades and signings, Pioli is responsible for FORTY FIVE new players to this organization.

And of these 45, it's fair to say that only Succop and Chambers are clear upgrades to their predecessors.

Two. Out of forty-five.

That's a whopping 4% success rate.

I'm sorry, but blaming Herm here is ridiculous. The best players on this team are Herm's players.

Looking at the current roster - including the active roster, PS and IR - 54% of the players currently in this organization are Pioli's.

Exactly half of the current starting 22 are Pioli's.

And this team is ONE win better than a 2008 squad that featured Tyler ****ing Thigpen at QB, and employed Gunther Cunningham as the DC.

With the majority being Pioli's hand-picked players.

Let the excuses flow like fine wine.

Discus.

This ought to be fun - let's hit that Millionth post.

That's not much, but I believe the big work happens this off-season. The only FULL off-season they've had.
LOL yes a kicker!

And they only got rid of LJ after he made them before that they continued to run him out on the field over Charles, that's a glowing endorsement that they know what they're doing.

That would appear to be part of the foundation of our 34 D. Moving Dorsey to DE and him picking up his game is part of the foundation. Save a NT our D Line has some what of a foundation being laid. That said it's till to early to know or judge. Thsi team isn't being built for 2009 that's just where it started.

If Herm were the coach, there would have been no reason to sign Canty or Haynesworth. Brown would have been a nice signing.

I think the Chiefs would have chosen plenty of offensive lineman, a MLB like Maualuga and would have continued on the path of rebuilding this franchise with youth.

Would that have translated to more wins? Absolutely. Even with Thigpen at QB, a better offensive line and a better defense (along with Tony Gonzalez & Chan Gailey) would have produced at LEAST six wins, if not eight or more.

This defense was not far away from competing. The offensive line could have used a new starting center and right tackle. One more solid draft under Herm would have gone a long way toward respectability.

Now, the Chiefs are an Expansion Franchise. And if you haven't noticed, Cleveland & Houston have not won a playoff game.

Bullshit.

But go ahead and claim that nonsense because you don't have a leg to stand on in this debate.

As usual.

And what's Denver's excuse?

You failed to address that one as well.

Or are you going to claim that without Orton, they'd suck?

Succop and Chambers are definitely positives, though we still need more evidence from the latter.

Regarding LJ, let's be honest, he did that to himself. Pioli made the right decision, but was there really a choice?

And how sickening is it that Charles was being grossly misused before LJ went stupid on Twitter?

I have plenty of patience if there is evidence the rebuild is being done right. Being done right does not necessarily mean it has to be the way I would like it done. Being done right means we should be seeing signs of progress. The Steelers game was obviously an outlier to the data that has been collected so far. It gave us all false hope. The reality is this rebuild has not begun to get off the ground yet. In fact, it may have been pushed back another year or two by poor decision making by the talent evaluators... and that is what I don't have patience for.

last years FA crop sucked. Canty is a role player, like Alex Magee, but Magee is a rook and will take a year to develop. Haynesworth is very good. Also injury prone, in the prime of his career, so by the time this team is a perennial contender, he is declining, and yet we would have paid a hundred million for him. Brown is OK. Thats it, OK. Not an impact player. This offseason boils down to Pioli knowing that a Haynesworth type of signing, although it pleases the internet GM's such as you, really doesn't translate into building a perennial contender because the team around him is so bad. So, rather than pull a Carl Peterson and bring in a few big dollar guys to sell tix, he is sticking to his plan to build a contender for the long haul.

I predicted 3 wins this season. I didn't expect anything close to instant reward. But I did expect just a little bit of progress. Something, anything to indicate we're headed in the right direction and actually building something. The fact is, many are scratching their heads trying to come up with a short list of improvements over last season, and coming up with next to nothing.

Yea well that didn't stop us from using the 3rd pick on a role player and then trading for a shitty QB, but hey all is well.

The worst part is there's no progress if anything they've gotten worse, especially Cassel.
