It's just fast and tight down there. That's actualky a pretty big opening and smith does a good job of moving that ml with his eyes on the back.

Against a fast defense like the seahawks, that's about what you're grtting down there.

****, I'm assuming that's earl thimas, dude breaks on Kelce's route then almost runs down the qb. ****.
No doubt; the windows are small down there. Like I said, had he made that throw, I wouldn't have complained. But as you've noted, perhaps it was precisely because Kelce settled down there and Smith was getting ready to lead him. The route could've easily called for that and one step from Kelce is about all he has to make the decision as to whether or not Kelce appears to be settling. If he was, it wasn't quick or obvious.

What I'm saying is that there are some good reasons to have not made that throw. If he makes it - fine. But he isn't wrong for not making it. Nor would he have been wrong for making it.

My preference is to not ever get your TE killed in the first quarter of a pre-season game. I'm glad he didn't throw the ball and in the process he showed a willingness to stay behind the line, keep his head upfield and throw his receiver to a spot on the field. That was a damn nice play by Smith.

I don't really have an issue with that circumstance, but there may come a time in january or February, we need that throw.

So, the play to maclin, while ended with a good result, was kind of meh and a bit why smith struggles in the redzone. Missed kelce in the middle, then wilson in the endzone on the scramble.

Hopefully in the season he pulls the trigger on the throw to the te in the middle.
Alex Smith had 3 guys open and still pulled the ball down.

fortunately he found someone open for a second time, not going to happen that often.

Alex Smith said the reason why he didn't throw it the first time is that a defender jump in front of him. He must do better.

It was good that he keep his eyes up and found another receiver though.

It looked like he saw Wilson and went to pull the ball up.. does anybody else see it.. and realized he couldn't get his momentum going in that direction to make a safe throw or maybe he was scared (Smith haters personal choice) but I think he made a good play to go to his most trusted receiver

“I was really trying to hit Kelce in the middle of the field and actually had him open. I had kind of lost vision, the D-lineman had kind of jumped as I was going to throw it and just kind of tucked it and all of a sudden just kind of found myself rolling out.”

That's why he didn't throw to Kelce. To make the throw to wilson he would've had to stop and set his feet. he didn't have time.

Most of our redzone problems are playcalling more than anything. when we call conservative screens and swing passes down there we tend to struggle. when we call more traditional pass plays we tend to have more success.

What are the chances that we start the season with Ford and Zombo as out starting OLBs?

While Jamaal Charles has returned to practice in a limited way, the Kansas City Chiefs are still waiting for Tamba Hali. The veteran linebacker had surgery to clean up debris in his knee and hasn't practiced all offseason or in camp.

The delay in Hali's case is more about the general state of his balky knees, which have given him trouble for years.

"Tamba's isn't as much the surgical part of it," coach Andy Reid said. "He's getting up there in years and his knees are not in the greatest of shape. Nothing that surgery is going to correct on that."

The Chiefs are expecting Hali to return to practice shortly and be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener against the San Diego Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. But Reid's comments suggest the Chiefs will have to manage and perhaps limit Hali's playing time when he's back. That's something Hali himself suggested the Chiefs might do back in March, when he signed his new contract.

"I know they want to limit my role as in how much I play to be able to sustain me over the 24-week period of playing a season, but I believe there will be times that I may have to play the entire game and I believe there will be times I have to step back and there will be other guys that will play," Hali said then. "I'll just be needed when they need me."

This isn't an enviable situation for the Chiefs, who are without Justin Houston. Without Houston and Hali, their top outside linebacker is Dee Ford, who didn't play well in Saturday's preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

"I'm not going to tell you he had his best game," Reid said. "That's not what I'm going to tell you. There are plays he wishes he had back."

Neither one of those things are really great especially considering what they gave him in $$$$ and it is an age as well as wear thing for him.

He had that procedure 7 months ago. He's fine. He was doing his MMA shit before training camp and looked great. No sense in him going out there and getting hurt. He doesn't need the practice. We'll definitely rotate, but he will play a lot.
