Reaction to Marcus smart shoving a fan

Just curious... If the fan called Smart a racial slur, was he justified for shoving the fan.

I think its an interesting debate about where the line should be drawn for fans to get away with jawing at players. Let's first see if there's any truth to this. My personal opinion is that sports should have leeway for fan behavior, but there's a line that fans too often cross.

But for the record, I think most rational people saw all this and sided with Smart. He made a mistake, but he wasn’t exactly wrong. That guy was eminently shoveable, especially if he was calling Smart a piece of crap, or worse.

We could parse the situation further, but the mistake Smart made is obvious, and how it happened is completely understandable. It’s possible to criticize Smart while also empathizing with him, and that’s probably where this should end. Three games feels like the right suspension.

That was the only thought from Saturday night that stuck with me till today. It sucks that he’s stuck in college, costing himself money with each bad game, and not getting paid a dime while SportsCenter and 100,000 people on Twitter turn five seconds of video into 48 hours of debate about his character and his future.

Marcus Smart is a guy who watched his older brother die when he was 9 years old, who had the rest of his brothers tell him it’s up to him to carry the family, and now he’s doing it. His first purchase when he makes the NBA will be a new kidney for his mom. Does he really need to put up with some college basketball writer crowing about all the lessons he needs to learn?

Really? How many times had the same thing happened without a college basketball player shoving a fan in the stands? Id venture to say millions of times. If Smart cant handle it at this level, whats he gonna do at the next? Go "Ron Artest" on someone in the stands? He definitely has some lessons to learn. Dont minimize what he did. Fault on both sides.....

Fans say shit. Always have - always will. They get asked to leave events and sometimes get banned from coming back. Sometimes they even go to jail for their actions. That's the norm in that instance. There are much better ways for an athlete to deal with out of line fans who act and say stupid stuff.

I personally feel that if we looked the other way for a while (a few years) and let these players beat the shit out of fans when they scream out-right obscenities, we might find that these asshole fans (and cheer their along instead of degrade the other team).

While I don't want to go back to prehistoric days, I do think we need to evolve to a state where you only talk as tough as you're willing to back up (or try to). This cowardly shit of expecting the players to be the bigger person is shit!

Yell while the other team is trying to concentrate, be quite so your team can focus and think, and waive those goofy things to distract them then they shoot free throws - it's all good, but call an athlete a name/insult only as much as you're willing to back up.

I think fat-man is little more than an Internet tough guy. He may be there in person, but he's sure counting on rules and the current pussification of the planet keeping his teeth secured to his gums.
