How much is your rent/house payment?

This thread was inspired by BD's thread where he offers to pay $3200 per month rent.

I don't really care to discuss this. Thanks for your support, though.

Money pit.

I actually did that back in the early 90's. Spent a bunch but came out with a great old house that was lsited on the national register of historic places. Lots of work though.

All the expensive stuff. Betcha the wife will want new furniture, drapes, carpeting, etc. Figure in landscaping and yard maintanance. Don't forget general maintanance like painting, roofing, and invariably a heater , ac or water tank have something wrong with it. It isn't as bad if you're handy with wrench or whatnot, but given that you're a politico fundraiser, I somehow doubt that is really your cup of tea (nothing personal--you'll learn quickly if you're half the tightwad that I am).

Generally set aside between 1 and 2% of the value of your home for maintanance; you miy not use it all in a year, but at some point in time you'll need that money; see new roof or paint job.

The rest of it is all great advice, but many guys would figure on maintenance costs and completely miss the wife decorating factor. Apparently all towels, area rugs, etc. that work perfectly fine become completely defective when you buy a new house. I told my wife she has $X to spend on new decorations, linens, etc. for the new house. Of course I'm actually prepared to let her spend X + $1500, but if I told her that she'd go way beyond what the real limit is.

The church owns the house and it's figured into the salary package (i.e. free rent). It isn't much, and we hope to be buying our own in the next year or so. It does however, beat the "Modular Home" the last church put us in.

$1900/month for principal and interest on a 15 year note.

I pay my own taxes and insurance but it would probably be another $250/month.
