Dallas Cowboys scouting report: Kansas City Chiefs

Dallas Cowboysscouting report: Kansas City Chiefs

01:40 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 7, 2009
By RICK GOSSELIN / The Dallas Morning News

Kansas City quarterback Matt Casseland running back Larry Johnson can't wear enough padding to protect them from the punishment they are taking each week.

The Chiefs are in the opening stages of a rebuilding program under new general manager Scott Pioli. He inherited a 2-14 team and tried to address the offensive and defensive lines during the off-season. He also acquired what he believes to be his quarterback of the future in Cassel.

But one area Pioli could not adequately address was wide receiver. Holdovers Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradleyand veteran newcomers Bobby Engram and Bobby Wade share one common trait – a lack of game-breaking speed. They aren't going to run past anyone.

That allows defenses to single cover the two receivers on the flank and invest as many as nine players in run Defense and harassment of the quarterback.

So Johnson has nowhere to run and Cassel no time to throw. Cassel has already missed one game with an injury, and the Chiefs have allowed 13 sacks through four weeks.

Johnson brought a sterling 4.5-yard career average into the 2009 season. But he is averaging a paltry 2.6 yards in his 72 carries and is still looking for his first touchdown. This from a back who once scored 20 TDs in one season on his way to the 2005 AFC rushing crown.

The Chiefs are still searching for their first rushing touchdown of 2009. Baltimore's Willis McGahee has five touchdowns in 37 carries. The Chiefs have none in 109 carries. Kansas City's longest run is 24 yards by backup halfback Jamaal Charles.

When Cassel has time to throw, his receivers give him little after the catch. Bradley has a team-best 50-yarder, but he doesn't even start. Bowe's long is 29 yards, Wade's is 20 and Engram's is 18.

A lack of offensive plays has led to Kansas City's 0-4 start. The lack of offensive speed could make for another long afternoon Sunday against the Cowboys.

Evidence A for why the Chiefs could never develop a n00b QB.

And my favorite rebuttal to this is: the same people who want to draft a QB wouldn't give Thigpen a chance!!!

As if some afterthought from Coastal Carolina is an apt comparison to an elite prospect.

You're right. He was overated before Sunday. Sunday just confirmed it. But it is hilarious that it was always Cassel vs Sanchez until the Saints game and now its Aaron Rodgers.

In addition, the Giants and Eagles rank #1 and #2 in passing defense, while the Vikings and St.

That tells me that Rogers has been in that system and with his receivers a lot more than Cassel has. Familiarity with his receivers and knowledge of how they run their routes will lead to a higher degree of confidence in terms of getting them the ball.

It also tells me that GB is leaning more on Rogers because they, remarkably, have a worse running game than the Chiefs. (#22 versus the Chiefs at #18.)

It also tells me that the Packers have played against the following teams, which have their defensive rankings listed:

Minnesota: #1 sacks, #18 defense, #12 passing
Chicago: #3 sacks, #14 defense, #23 passing
Cincinnati: #4 sacks, #17 defense, #26 passing
St. Louis: #19 sacks, #19 defense, #19 passing

Whereas the Chiefs have played against:

Giants: #1 defense, #15 sacks, #1 passing
Philly: #3 defense, #9 sacks, #2 passing
Baltimore: #8 defense, #9 sacks, #23 passing
Oakland: #18 defense, #12 sacks, #11 passing

Basically, Cassel's numbers versus Rodgers numbers are pretty relevant considering the defenses that they've gone against.

Lets not really factor in that Rodgers can make throws that Cassel can't.

Such as? Cassel has made a couple of real pretty touchdown passes this season that required a rather deft touch.

Sure, Rodgers has a cannon, but even Favre made his arm look like a limp noodle on Monday night by comparison.

I don't give a shit if Rodgers can throw bullets. Montana didn't have a cannon. Jim Kelly didn't have a cannon. Brady doesn't have a cannon. Fran Tarkenton didn't. Troy Aikman didn't either. However, Jamarcus Russell is purported to have a huge arm. Same with Jeff George. Kyle Boller as well. David Klingler.

It's not really a prerequisite in determining the overall success of a quarterback and team in this league.

If you think game 4 confirmed anything about a n00b QB, I don't know what to tell you.

No matter how much you don't like it, Sanchez was/is an elite prospect.

And Rodgers' name has been thrown around on this forum for the last couple of years, as it became increasingly more clear that DJ was Scott Fujita.

The way Scott Fujita has been playing, I'd be really happy if DJ was Scott Fujita.

Buffalo signed him like 2 weeks ago making GB probably pretty upset he's gone.
