Haley says Jon Baldwin could play Sunday

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said today that, after a seven-week absence, rookie wide receiver Jon Baldwin could return to full participation this week and might play Sunday at Indianapolis.

Baldwin, the Chiefs' first-round draft pick, suffered a fractured thumb in August after an altercation with teammate Thomas Jones. He began catching passes about 10 days ago, before his team's game at San Diego, the coaches and trainers apparently decided that he wasn't yet ready for full practices or participation in a game.

Haley said Baldwin would likely work with the special-teams unit this week, at least until he's ready to join the receivers corps on a full-time basis.

Looks like Chiefs will see Painter at QB for Colts

Kind of odd watching the Colts play the other night without Peyton Manning at QB. But he's out and apparently Kerry Collins still is, too.
Collins, who is recovering from a concussion that forced him to miss last week's game against Tampa Bay, is unlikely to be ready to play Sunday against the Chiefs in Indianapolis.

So the Chiefs will evidently see Curtis Painter, who would make the second start of his NFL career.

''Kerry has not been cleared as of yet,'' Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell said. ''They're allowing him to do a little bit but not much. So at this point in time Curtis is our starter.''

Painter is completing just 44 percent of his passes and has taken five sacks in 41 pass attempts.

''There's not anyone that can do exactly what Peyton's been able to do over the years,'' Caldwell said. ''He's been in the system for 14 years. He knows it like the back of his hand. So we don't anticipate nor expect anyone to be able to duplicate what he's done. Each of these guys have their own personalities and their own strengths and their own God-given gifts and what we try to do is put them in the best position to take advantage of that.''

The Chiefs dink and dunk passing game will neutralize Freeney and Mathis. McCluster should have a terrific game.

Baldwin is gonna "win us a few games"? Drugs are bad.

Rookie WRs rarely have have an impact anyway, and this guys has missed a fourth of the season. He's not Megatron.

The status of first-round draft pick Jonathan Baldwin is sure to get plenty of play leading up to Sunday’s game in Indianapolis. For the first time since suffering a preseason thumb injury on

August 17th, Baldwin completed a full practice with the Chiefs offense.

On Wednesday afternoon, Baldwin caught footballs, ran routes and worked just as any other healthy wide receiver would. He had previously practiced in a limited capacity, running through individuals with the wide receivers, but heading to an alternate practice field when team repetitions began.

“He’s being evaluated every day just like everybody else,” Coach Todd Haley said. “His evaluation has just been a little different.

“It’s been interesting because he’s over on the other field most of the time just having the play read to him of what the rest of the guys are doing on Field One. He’s on Field Two, breaking his own two-man huddle because there’s a coach in there giving him the play, and then running the play, run and pass. It’s kind of like his OTAs, I’d say, that he’s just had a month of.”

Haley seemed encouraged about Baldwin’s status as on-field preparation for Indianapolis officially began. But both Haley and Baldwin also stopped short of declaring the wide receiver ready to play.

“That’s up to the coaches,” Baldwin said after practice.

This week presents an interesting scenario for the Chiefs and Baldwin.

Even if Baldwin practices fully throughout the week, which seems likely, the Chiefs may choose to hold him out for one more game. Doing so would give Baldwin three full weeks of practices before returning after the bye week October 23rd at Oakland.

Whenever Baldwin does return, how quickly he’s acclimated into the offensive game plan is also worth watching. The rookie has little experience working with QB Matt Cassel, having played with backup quarterbacks Tyler Palko and Ricky Stanzi in his only game of preseason work.

“We’ll just have to see where he is physically, but I know that he’s in good condition and he’s been really working hard,” Haley said. “I’m just excited that he’s able to – for his own personal self – to be able to get out there and start practicing again full on with his teammates.”

The Chiefs currently roster seven wide receivers, so there is no hurry to rush Baldwin back before both parties are comfortable. Haley also said he expects Baldwin to be able to contribute on special teams when he’s ready to make an NFL debut.

Kid is a player with great hands and will probably gain the trust of Cassel pretty early.

Cassel is gonna have to try pretty hard to not look good with this set of receivers.

He is gonna bust hard because Cassel doesn't use his #2, forget his #3. We won't know the truth about Baldwin until we get a QB switch that isn't Tyler Palko.
