Correct, the Gold Glove is always a year or more behind performance. Yadi has always been the best defensive catcher in baseball since day 1. He didn't get a Gold glove until like year 3 or 4.

Well, here's one sure answer as to why Cain wasn't among the finalists--he wasn't qualified.

I ran across an article about the Gold Glove award, which is run by Rawlings. It said that the Gold Glove rules are that a player must have played 95 games and 713 innings at his position by the 141st game of the season.

By the 141st game, Cain only had 77 games in Center and 609 innings, so he was well short in both categories.
For the whole season he only had 93 games and 723 innings.

And, there's your explanation. He just didn't play enough in center, and it wasn't just shifting over to right in the later innings. He was well short of the games requirement.

This article says:

That's not true. Its not his innings played ranking, it is that he didn't have enough innings to qualify (or games).

Its a relatively new rule, enacted when guys were winning while hardly playing any games at the position. It was strictly a vote, and guys were winning just on reputation.

Here's the article I saw that discussed the qualifications. It was just written last year. It does mention that they might change the games AND innings requirement to OR. But Kiermaier would still seem to fall short.

All I can think of is that the requirements are skewed for players who aren't on the roster (it looks like Kiermaier was a later call-up). Maybe he qualified because he played in a sufficient percentage of the games he was on the roster. I can't locate 2014 rules, so this is the best I have to go on.
