Should the NFL change the rules for pass interference on underthrown passes?
I've seen a lot of folks talking about this, including Mitchell Schwartz. The thought is that it rewards the QB for making a bad throw and it's impossible for DB's to defend when the WR purposefully uses it to get the call.
What do you think?

Look at some of these under thrown ducks.
You can't tell me you wouldn't be pissed off if the Chiefs got called for a DPI on a duck that was 10 yards under thrown and the WR had no shot and the penalty gave them about 50 yards. That's exactly what happened with the Eagles at :50 in this video.

It wasn't a bad throw. It was just the best throw that Wilson could have made at that moment with the defensive line in his face. The DB committed pass interference with the ball in the air and the penalty was properly called and properly assessed.

In other words, a bad throw.

WR get call for PI when they run into a DB who is watching the ball and trying to catch it. It just doesn’t happen as often for obvious reasons. The rules are fine as they are.

This is the cheat code that Brady used to come back in games late. Surprised Mahomes and KC doesn't do it to get the cheap yards.

I like the rule when it benefits us, but I do not like it when the rule is bad for us.

No, the rule should stay the same (other than just becoming a 15 yard penalty) and DPI should be called on underthtown balls.
I understand that it's frustrating, but part of playing defense is not running over or through the person you are defending, regardless of what they do as far as starting, stopping, coming back for the ball, etc. And some passes are intentionally under thrown, either as a strategy to beat a good CB with a back shoulder type throw, or in an attempt to draw the DPI penalty. Why should a legitimate offensive strategy be eliminated because defenders can't defend correctly? |

It definitely shouldn’t go to just 15 yards either.

The reason why I am against the 15-yard penalty is you see it when a DB knows he's toast on a big play and he'll grab the receiver's foot or leg to prevent a home run ball. That PI absolutely needs to be a spot ball flag.
You could make it a judgment call, where an official could decide between a flagrant PI penalty vs. incidental contact PI (15 yards variety) on a deep passing play but I think that opens up a can of worms. Officials already have enough power and so do the ultra-annoying TV rules analysts. |
