Give me your best salary negotiation advice

I have a job interview tomorrow for a position that is very intriguing to me. The company is aware of what my salary expectations are, but the recruiter that I spoke with said that my salary expectations were on the higher range of what they generally offer for this position.

When would salary be discussed? Is it good to talk about at the end of the interview, or wait for them to make an offer?

I've been with the same employer for about 8 years so I'm a little behind the game. Any help would be appreciated.

I usually go with one of two different strategies. Either the Dwight shrute method of rocking out and psyching myself up before the meeting or the Jim halpert approach of asking for a pay decrease.

I was on a committee recently and interestingly heard feedback from other committee members that because the job was perceived as a pay cut that it was a negative on the candidate. It was the candidate I preferred and I tried to suggest that the position was a step up in their career and they were candid with the expectations of what the salary would be. But the other committee members saw it as a negative that they might look to be increased quickly to what they were getting from a previous employer.

With that in mind, I'm thinking it's relevant to make it clear that your expectations meet what they are willing to offer, if you really want to be considered for the position. You don't want them to think you'll take the job and then in a couple months feel like you should be making more money. So if I were you, I might elaborate on this area more in the interview.

You need to display dominance and be the alpha. Generally this is accomplished by displaying larger genitalia than the interviewer. Also barring your teeth while making loud aggressive noises. Try and get the high ground. Conference tables work well for this. You can further drive the point home by covering yourself in the stench of your enemy's feces. Just don't over do it.

1. Do your research. Understand what the normal range for that position is and the standing of the company you are interviewing with is in the industry.

2. Know what the bottom number is that you will accept the job for and add 30% when they ask what your salary demand is.

3. Know what you expect as far as negotiated benefits like bonus structure, vacation, and work from home opportunities.

4. Understand that if they make you an offer that you have the bargaining power. They have already decided that you are who they want for the job.

Negotiate from a position of value. You want to emphasize what you bring to the company. Ask detailed questions about the needs of the company.

Never bring up salary. Never throw out the first number. Let them bring it up. If they ask you what your expected salary is, ask them what the salary range is.

Frame your request with an accusations audit. "Forgive me, but I'm going to say something that sounds selfish." Then throw out a number near the top or slightly above their range. Try and compromise near the top of their salary range.

Salary negotiations have a HUGE impact on your future earnings. Don't leave money on the table.
