Trade Official: QB Alex Smith to #Chiefs confirmed

Reid Ferrin ‏@KCChiefs_Reid

Trade Official: QB Alex Smith to #Chiefs confirmed. Stay tuned to http://KCchiefs.com for more info #chiefskingdom

Adam Teicher ‏@adamteicher

The Alex Smith to #Chiefs trade is now official. 49ers get 2nd round pick plus conditional 2014 pick. Chiefs get starting QB

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers will acquire an undisclosed 2013 draft choice, and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, in return for sending QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Smith must pass a physical in Kansas City for the trade to be executed.

“We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

Originally the first overall draft pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by San Francisco, Smith spent eight seasons in the red and gold. During his tenure with the 49ers, he started 75 of the 80 games in which he played, completing 1,290 of 2,177 pass attempts (59.3%) for 14,280 yards and 81 TDs.

In 2012, Smith was 6-2-1 as a starter, completing 153 of 218 pass attempts (70.2%) for 1,737 yards with 13 TDs and 5 INTs, and a QB rating of 104.1. In 2011, Smith led the 49ers to their first NFC West title and postseason berth since 2002. He threw for a career-high 3,144 yards on 273 of 445 pass attempts with 17 TDs, 5 INTs and a 90.7 QB rating.

Born in Seattle, WA, Smith attended Helix High School in LaMesa, CA. At the University of Utah, Smith boasted a 21-1 record as a starter and became the first player in school history to be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

Well, let's hope that a legit NFL HC like Andy Reid and a QB that doesn't turn the ball over three times a game will be able to take advantage of the talent on this squad.

As everybody knows, there was enough talent on this team last season to win at least 7 games but without a HC that understands both sides of the game combined with a turnover machine at QB all that talent went to waste. Good news is, the talent is still there for the new HC to use. I'm optimistic.

What a mess.

First off, the Chiefs believe they've acquired the best possible QB available in 2013. It's hard to argue that fact when the guy has been successful the past two seasons, there was no one available in free agency that could even match his record and there's no one in the draft that is an immediately game changer.

The fact that the Chiefs haven't drafted a first round QB since 1983 is of absolutely no concern to Andy Reid and John Dorsey. They were hired to perform their jobs to the best of their ability, not to carelessly draft a position player because it hadn't been done in 30 years.

Go. Be Optomistic. I don't give a ****.

I'm not getting excited for something I don't believe is going be anything to be excited about. I'm not setting myself up for disapointment. They all ready disapointed me with the trade and very disapoint we will draft a LTRT with our top pick.

JFC.

You cannot "prove" that Jeno Smythe will become an immediate franchise QB. Period. End of story.

TattooBoy wants the Chiefs front office to "prove to the fans" that they're committed to winning, NOW, as if the past 42 years of a mostly losing franchise is somehow insignificant.

Do you understand the diff? Capice?

That's a fatally flawed strategy.

When looking for a QB you need to ask yourself if the player is capable of leading a team to the SB. If he isn't, there is no reason to spend anything on acquiring him unless he's a backup.

Reid and Dorsey's job should be to win a Super Bowl. If they don't feel that there is a QB available in 2013 who can win a SB, that's an acceptable decision, but by committing to Alex Smith and constructing the rest of the team in the style they have, they've essentially said that there is no QB worth it in 2014 and possibly 2015.

It's a classic example of not being able to see the forest for the trees.

It will make the team better in 2013, but that's the equivalent of taking out a cash advance on a credit card to pay your mortgage every month.

I happen to think that Geno Smith can win a Super Bowl, but I understand that such a belief is not a consensus, so passing on him, although a poor decision in my mind, is defensible.

What isn't defensible is picking up a QB that I believe almost no one thinks can win a Super Bowl, because it makes acquiring a truly elite one more difficult.

And compounding that decision with Chase Daniels and $10 million dollars is even more disgusting.

I could get slightly excited/interested/hopeful whatever you want to call it if we rolled the dice on a 2nd round QB this year (after moving back).

We're not even going to do that.

It's at least 3 years of Alex Smith from here on out, and I doubt they pick anyone high in an effort to replace him during that three years.

Alex Smith = the death of Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe.
