I think he’s counting the difference between the $25M they’re supposedly offering with the $20M he’s currently due to get which includes some of the signing bonus from this current deal that he wouldn’t have to earn out.

The agents blinked with the Florio reporting. But maybe that breaks the logjam.

But if I was Veach I wouldn’t budge. They have no real leverage.

If the Chiefs want to give him $10M (or even $5M) just because then that’s up to them, but I don’t see CJ holding out 8 games. And if he does that would be a Leveon Bell level of stupid.

I think the Bosa situation is part of why this is still hanging out there.

The Chiefs offer to CJ looks basically like it doesn't even remotely acknowledge the existence of the Donald deal at all. Like, at all. And I can understand how for CJ that might be difficult to appreciate given that he was a better player than Donald this past year and is getting offered far, far less.

The problem is that Bosa is probably trying to become the highest paid defensive player in the sport and eclipse the Donald deal as his reps negotiate against that rather than the TJ Watt contract.

Can you imagine agreeing to the Chiefs offer only to see Bosa somehow get the 49ers to pay him against the Donald deal in the 32-33mm AAV range? You'd feel pretty stupid at that point.

The Bosa domino might need to fall before the CJ one does.

**** Jones. **** his agents.

Hold out. Retire. Do whatever the **** you want.

Asshole.
I'm right with you now. I'm talking about mid off season when Jones and his representation had plenty of time to get their stupid asses back to the table to hammer this out instead of flipping it and refusing to communicate. If those numbers are accurate it's clearly on Jones representation and it his fault for not firing these reeruns and finding someone willing to get to the table and get this shit done.

A 10 million gap over three years is relative peanuts to work out when you've got the structure and effective guarantees done. Stupid ****ing jackasses. Unbelievable that they're actually going through with a holdout that will cost him twice as much than what the effective gap is. Morons.

Yeah so I guess it depends on if what is being reported is true, they would rip up his old contract and replace it with 3 years 74 million or just do a 2 year extension. They are going to need to lower his cap hit this year due to us having like $5 in cap space left so I would imagine the former.

All current news aside, the Florio report doesn't change anything re: the situation and who has leverage.

Jones wants to hold out 2-3 weeks or up to 7 weeks if the Chiefs don't give him a deal?

Cook. Hook em. The Chiefs will use the salary cap savings to bandaid the DL with another vet who is currently available (Dunlap; Ioannidis; Hicks; Wormley) and then use the reduced 2023 salary to franchise tag Jones for 2024.

Congrats. Not only did you cost yourself somewhere between 5 and 10M in earnings on your age 29 season, you cost yourself money on your age 30 season, too, and reduced the size of your overall deal.

There's not a move he can make that actually increases his payout and makes up for the potential earnings losses if he holds out into the season.

If Bosa does get the highest paid honor, does that strengthen Jones’ position, or does Veach just ignore it like the Donald contract and we are still sitting here spinning tires?

It has zero impacts on what the Chiefs should pay.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that.
I take this to mean Veach will sign a largish third contract if it either has team friendly outs or is a short enough duration. So the team isn't on the hook for a long time when the player really is getting up into that age where the play doesn't justify the money.

If this is his approach, I'm with him on this. Pats way blah blah.

Getting rid of players a little too soon generally is better than getting rid of them too late.

If the team really does need a WR1, for instance, to make up for Kelce in a couple of years, having a lot of money tied up in aging CJ may not be the best strategy.

I’m sure he’d like to ignore it and it doesn’t need to change any of Veach’s calculus here and now. But it likely changes CJ’s fair market value on some level and also would change the value of what it would eventually cost to replace him.

I'm ok with letting him sit out for a while. We have a couple young DT's on the team, let them eat.
