Edward is seen as the perfect guy, even though he's got so many warning signs he should glow in the dark instead of sparkle in the sun. Everything about the books is dangerous.

I realize that there are 4 books. I also realize that they probably won't be taught in American Literature classes anytime soon. But what I don't see is the supposed abstinence message or rightwing/mormon morality message that was attributed to it. If you think the story is banal or in some other way less impressive than, for example, Interview with the Vampire, I don't have a problem with that critique. I thought the movie was OK for what it was, a teenage version of a vampire story, but it's not great and afaic it shouldn't be mistaken for a wholesome example of conservative family values.

GF finally talked me into watching this last night, and it was much better than I anticipated.

For a girl movie, it was solid, and I will probably see the next movies in the series. Some of you were way too negative about it.

I took the time to read one of the books in the series. Eh. It wasn't garbage, per se, but it lacked the edge that I have come to expect from the vampire mythos. My daughter brought the movie home from her mother's house, so I will likely sit down and watch it sometime in the next day or so.

If you want some insane vampire novels, replete with horror and gore both, I would strongly recommend the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. There are 13 or 14 books in the series now, and they are absolutely mind-blowing. These vampires are not romantic... they are nasty, aggressive killing machines.
