Sweeney: I think Mike Remmers wins starting LG.

Generally speaking, Pete Sweeney is a sharp dude and rarely shoots off the hip at these things. He is also pretty connected at 1 Arrowhead Drive.

Currently, he sees the competition boiling down to Remmers v. Wylie, with Remmers winning out.

Pretty interesting, if Remmers takes the job, look at these other OL we have that he got the gig over:

Andrew Wylie
Martinas Rankin
Lucas Niang
Nick Allegretti
To say nothing of two outstanding UDFA prospects in Yasir Durant and Darryl Williams, and Ryan Hunter, who has seen (horrific) snaps at guard.

I wonder what he’s seen or heard that lead him to this conclusion.

Nope.

If Remmers is on the roster Week 1, his salary is guaranteed for the entire season, so if the Chiefs were to cut him after Week 1, they'd take a Dead Money hit of $887,500. The same holds true for the others I listed.

That in no way guarantees a roster spot for Remmers.

Are we allowed to blame Cam Erving for Rankin’s injury?

Cam got pushed back, which caused Schwartz to get rolled up. Schwartz came out, Rankin moved to RT and got hurt immediately.

Cam was really bad at tackle. I saw him completely whiff against Judon and it's a wonder that Mahomes' head is still attached.

is remmers of a guard build? I know nothing about him but assumed because he played tackle he was probably a little longer and leaner type.

It's amazing we got by with Can Erving as our best option at swing tackle.

I agree that he could be cut, but according to spotrac.com that $887,500 is guaranteed, so it would be dead money.

Quote:
Mike Remmers signed a 1 year, $1,187,500 contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, including a $137,500 signing bonus, $887,500 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,187,500. In 2020, Remmers will earn a base salary of $1,050,000 and a signing bonus of $137,500, while carrying a cap hit of $887,500 and a dead cap value of $887,500.
The Chiefs currently have $10,255,709 of dead money with Eric Berry and Cameron Erving making up most of that.

If it comes down to keeping the better younger OL rather than Mike Remmers, I'm sure Chiefs swallow the dead money, but it is something that the Chiefs have to consider.

Overthecap.com says same thing but we could trade Mike Remmers (like we did Carlos Hyde) and then it would only cost us the $137,500 bonus money.

Either you didn't read what I wrote or you didn't understand it.

Remmers is a Vested Veteran. His salary is guaranteed ONLY if he's on the roster Week 1. If he's not on the roster Week 1 the Chiefs owe him nothing and he has a ZERO cap number. For salary cap purposes, he counts toward the 51 as of today.

The reason for the $137k, which is the same for Sherman, Hamilton and Pennel, is because the Veteran Minimum for guys with 10 years service is $1,050,000 dollars but if they're on the roster for Week 1, there's a exemption of $137k.

The Chiefs are not on the hook for any of those salaries or Dead Money unless they're on the roster the first week of the season.

We saw a living example of this in 2017 with C.J. Spiller.

Chiefs kept bringing him back in for the first few weeks, but since he was cut hours before the first game and re-signed hours after it, he never had a cap hit.

C.J Spiller did not have a contract like Mike Remmer.

The Chiefs are taking advantage of the Veteran Salary Benefit rule.

From Article 27, Section 16, page 183 from the NFL CBA.

Quote:
Section 16. Guarantees: If a Qualifying Contract, or a Four-Year Player Qualifying Contract, with guarantees is terminated, the player shall continue to receive the guaranteed portion of the contract and that money shall continue to count against the Salary Cap, but the benefit portion of the player’s compensation (including the subsidy) shall cease. For example, if a player with a $910,000 Qualifying Contract, which includes a $750,000 Paragraph 5 guarantee, is terminated after the eighth week of the regular season, he receives $750,000 of the $910,000 Minimum Salary. If the player signs multiple guaranteed Qualifying Contracts covering the same League Year at the applicable Minimum Salary, the maximum guaranteed salary he can earn under all such Qualifying Contracts is $750,000.
The Chiefs have signed several players using this Veteran Salary Benefit, Sherman, Hamilton, Pennel, and Remmer. Look for contracts that have a $137,500 bonus and a reduced cap hit. I'm not sure if Demarcus Robinson got this kind of deal too.

The good news, it can save the Chiefs money against the cap. But overthecap.com says it is guaranteed. Spotrac.com says their money is guaranteed. The above portion of the CBA says the player will be paid.

Herbe Teope said on yesterday's Sportsbeat KC podcast that he believes Remmers is the current starter at LG.

Says with the nonexistent offseason, Niang will be too far behind and Wylie would be his only serious competition.

I really wouldn't expect any rookie to win the starting job other than CEH at this point.

That would make sense if Wylie didnt already have serious time in the system imo. The short offseason would hurt a new guy.
