Rumors: cleveland looks to trade more players: Josh Gordon

Josh Gordon Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz and Speculation Surrounding Browns WR
BY JOSEPH ZUCKER
(FEATURED COLUMNIST)
ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2013

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports
The Cleveland Browns' fire sale may yet continue as the team has reportedly made wide receiver Josh Gordon available.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Browns are willing to part with Gordon along with fellow wide receiver Greg Little:

ESPN's Adam Caplan adds that Gordon has actually been on the trade block for "several weeks":

Gordon is returning to the field in Week 3 after serving a two-game suspension at the start of the regular season, following a violation of the league's substance-abuse policy. He came into the season with some lofty expectations after his rookie year, in which he caught 50 passes for 805 yards and five touchdowns.

This news is exactly what Browns fans won't want to hear. It comes the same week as Cleveland essentially gave up on the 2013 season just two weeks into the season, first naming Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback over the banged-up Brandon Weeden and backup Jason Campbell, and then trading Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts.

For a fanbase as tortured as the Browns' it will hurt to see yet another talented offensive player be pushed out the door.

Only 22 years old, Gordon will continue to improve, and he's the kind of player a team can build a receiving corps around. The fact that Cleveland is thinking about offoading him is arguably more surprising than the Richardson trade.

However, if Cleveland is really in rebuild mode, it would make sense to cash in now on its most marketable asset and prepare for the future. The trio of Joe Banner, Michael Lombardi and Rob Chudzinski have a definite direction they're taking this team. They're not afraid to burn some bridges in the short term if it helps the long term, either.

Only time will tell if the plan works out.

They have upgraded this team in a number of ways including QB. Alex Smith is by no means a franchise QB, but he is better than Cassel. Reid has this team believing and they are playing up to their potential, not rolling over and getting blown put like they did with great regularity last season.

I agree. I am also talking about until last season 2012, when they had randy moss who mentored him, he hadn't taken part in a ota, or preseason because of injuries, or laziness. In 2012, he came into camp in shape, healthy, and playing up to his ability. The qb was minimal in his emergence.

It was stated after this. He already ran the system. And, its not really that hard. Just tell him his route. Most of the adjustments are the same universal.

Yes, and I believe he's only owed 2.3 mil total for next season and the the 2015 season, so like 1.15 on avg for the next 2

It doesn't matter. The Browns have no interest in trading Gordon. The GM said so when he was hired, the President said so when he was asked about it, and the head coach has said so multiple times.

This whole thing was manufactured because the media got caught with their pants down on the Richardson trade and assumed the Browns were having a fire sale. Turns out, it was just a smart move. They started speculating about who else they were trying to purge and the Gordon thing stuck because he's a good player.

The media just doesn't like good players to be on the Browns.

As an example, why does the article linked on this message board about 10 trades they want to see done include 2 Browns, including the only QB the Browns can start (they definitely can't start Weeden again and the emergency QB on the roster also happens to be a backup FB, backup TE, backup WR and special teams kick cover man) and the only elite talent the Browns have on offense? The Rams are 3-4, about to be 3-5 after getting squished by the Seahawks today but for some reason they are buyers at QB and we (also 3-5) are sellers? Why is that?

Because the Browns have shipped out talent already this year and have floated names of guys they want to trade so the new regime can aquire picks and get their own guys?

Thing is, Richardson hasn't shown very much talent in the NFL. Here are the Colts' rushing statistics:

Code:
Player Carries	Yards	AVG	Long	20+	TDs	YPG	Fum	FumLost	1st Downs
TrentRichardson	75	228	3.0	16	0	2	45.6	1	1	14
Donald Brown	33	195	5.9	50	1	1	27.9	0	0	7
Ahmad Bradshaw	41	186	4.5	27	1	2	62	0	0	11
Andrew Luck	28	183	6.5	19	0	3	26.1	0	0	10
Vick Ballard	13	63	4.8	12	0	0	63	0	0	4
One of these things is not like the others.

And "have floated names" is pretty suspect... all the trade rumors have been pretty sketchy as far as origin and specifics. The closest I've heard to any sort of trade rumor confirmation from the team is that they're always looking to see how they can get better, not that they want to ship anyone out.

What were Richardson's number the last few years compared to guys he replaced and guys that replaced him in Cleveland?

First, another example of the idea that Cleveland can't have good players... From the PFF: Browns thread, sideline correspodent Pam Oliver's Forehead said this about Jordan Cameron:

Jordan Cameron. Christ. This guy is bolting for a big market team ASAP.

Now, as for you question about Trent... he was a rookie last year. Here are his rushing stats from last season:

Code:
NAME ATT	YDS	AVG	LONG	20+	TD	YDS/G	FUM	FUML	1DN
TrentRichardson	267	950	3.6	32	2	11	63.3	3	0	36
Mont. Hardesty	65	271	4.2	25	1	1	20.8	2	0	12
Brandon Weeden	27	111	4.1	25	1	0	7.4	2	0	11
Travis Benjamin	6	66	11	35	1	0	4.7	0	0	3
Brandon Jackson	8	54	6.8	25	1	0	27	0	0	2
Josh Cribbs	6	42	7	16	0	0	2.6	1	0	2
And from this year...

Code:
NAME ATT	YDS	AVG	LONG	20+	TD	YDS/G	FUM	FUML	1DN
Willis McGahee	79	231	2.9	16	0	1	38.5	0	0	15
TrentRichardson	31	105	3.4	10	0	0	52.5	0	0	3
ChrisOgbonnaya	19	101	5.3	22	1	0	12.6	0	0	9
Travis Benjamin	1	45	45	45	1	0	5.6	0	0	1
BrandonWeeden	9	37	4.1	11	0	0	7.4	0	0	1
Bobby Rainey	13	34	2.6	7	0	0	5.7	0	0	0
As you can see, the Browns have decided to go with McGahee, who they basically pulled off the street and was described last week as "still playing himself into game shape."

One thing I will say is that Richardson is an OUTSTANDING receiver out of the backfield. Guy has very natural hands catching the ball and is better when he gets some open space in front of him.

Breer just said the Giants are asking for a third round pick for Nicks and that the Browns are asking for a second rounder for Gordon.
