In the NFL, you have to make choices. I'd rather trade a good player than let one walk as a FA. IMO, Flowers is a guy that might not have a long shelf life. He's missed time due to injuries to both legs this year. Even when he has played, teams are throwing at him.

I don't think we could get a second round pick for him, but I'd gladly take it if offered. Getting seven good years out of a second round pick and then getting your pick back is a huge win.

The defense hasn't missed a beat without Flowers. Suggesting moving a player to improve other aspects of the team makes me dumb?

This is ridiculous to make a statement like that based on ONE GAME. Was Flowers ever supposed to be the difference maker against that Raiders offense??

Wait till we face the Broncos without Flowers and Welker rapes us... wait till Sean Smith has a couple of bad games a bit later this year.

It hasn't been just 1 game.

In 2011 Flowers signed a 6yr, ~$50 million contract with $22mill guaranteed.
In 2013 he restructured $4million salary into a signing bonus that would be spread out over 4yrs (i.e. helped the team save $3 mill against this yrs cap).

If the chiefs trade Flowers, than the chiefs would still have at least $6 million against the cap (likely all in 2014 because it would accelerate).

So for example, If Flowers is a chief in 2014 he would count $7.25 million against the cap. If the chiefs traded flowers, than he would still count at least $6 million against the cap.

It doesnt seem trading flowers is worth it since the team hasnt consistently shown it can draft well. Team would be trading a sure thing for, at best, a 50/50 prospect.

Are you sure you aren't confusing what would happen if we traded him with what would happen if we cut him from a cap standpoint?

When a player is cut all the guaranteed money (including signing bonus and salaries) are accelerated.

When a player is traded the original team is on the hook for the signing bonus (since it was paid at the time the contract is signed), but the new team is on the hook for other, not yet paid, guaranteed money (i.e. not paid guaranteed salary, workout bonuses, etc).

Chiefs are still on the hook for signing bonus money regardless.

Quote:
A player who leaves via trade, release or retirement before any bonus proration or other guaranteed money have been amortized carries an accelerated cap hit.

This place melted down when we didn't pay Carr $50MM and now people are suggesting to trade Flowers because a late round draft pick cut by another team has had 3 solid games.

This place melted down when we didn't draft geno smith too.

Truth be told Carr isn't worth 50 million and the defense in dallas isn't that great. The chiefs are the best in the league.

The fact is if you can improve your team by making a move you do it.

Well you are cherry picking here but to answer your question:

Rob Gronkowski and Dunlap. You could make a case for several others like Ben Tate since we don't have a back up to Jamaal Charles.
