Royals sign 4th rounder Tim Melville

http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/new...t=.jsp&c_id=kc

Royals come to terms with Tim Melville
08/15/2008 11:49 AM ET
MLB.com

KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals today announced they have reached an agreement with fourth-round draft choice Tim Melville. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We are very pleased to announce the signing of Tim Melville. Tim, his family, and advisor Jason Cook remained committed to this process from start to finish," said Deric Ladnier, Royals Senior Director of Scouting. "Tim is a very talented young man and we are excited that we were able to add a player of his caliber to the Royals organization."

Melville is the 2007 Aflac National High School Player of the Year recipient. The 6'5" right-hander from Wentzville, Mo. finished his senior campaign with an 8-1 record, a 2.56 ERA, and 89 strikeouts in 52 innings. As a junior, Melville compiled a 10-1 mark with a 0.89 ERA which helped Holt High School reach the Missouri Class 4-A finals.

We have until 11pm cst to sign Hosmer and Ryan Curl...glad we got Mellville, considered at the 15th slot in the 1st round but dropped due to signability issues.

I was being a smartass about giving Glass the benefit of the doubt.

Easy, when you draft someone just because he'll sign and who is clearly not worthy of the selection, see Billy Butler, there's no award for getting the deal done. Who cares? We've had a few years of legit. draft picks signed. '05 on. Three years isn't enough to convince me that Glass will do the right thing. The 12 previous years taught me differently.

Wrong? Because I'm skeptical of David Glass? I didn't say it wouldn't, but I'm not 100 percent confident. As I've said, I will give the guy his due props when this happens.

Until something else goes wrong and you start bitching about his draft picks from 2001 again, right?

No. When Glass shows a consistent dedication to winning, I'll be happy. For example when payroll matches what the team receives in revenue sharing.

Tell me again why the signing of a first-round selection who has no business being drafted in the top 30 proves guys like Hosmer are a lock. You haven't explained this logic.

And you believe this because Soren Petro spouts it off?

It's pretty well known the Royals get more sharing money than their payroll is...

You've got to ****ing kidding. There's no way you can believe this?!?

He's never failed to sign someone, of course it seems like we've only taken the best talent since '05...but he's NEVER failed to sign someone. Are you serious? Dan? Is that you?

Like I've consistently said, this year's draft would be a true turning point, but I need to see it happen to completion to believe.

Again, because Soren Petro says it's true? Can you find a legit link? Can you also find a link of the other expenditures involved with running a professional baseball team?

No you don't. You'll give a nice golf clap for now, but when the next thing goes wrong you'll cry and bitch again. I bet you were cheering for the Moustakas signing last year, saying the tide has finally turned.

The owners don't open the books. Yes, I think Petro has done a pretty good job of tracking down this info. Going to have to go with the "journalists" on this one.

Again, explain your logic of "always signing draft picks" when, for a lot of years, these picks have been made BECAUSE THEY'LL SIGN.

Nope. Dig up any post I've made about this year's draft and I've been very positive about it, largely because of the Melville selection. But you're right, I'm going to continue to want to hold Glass accountable.

I'm struggling to remember the last player that was woefully overdrafted in the 1st round. It wasn't Butler...he was a 1st round pick. Maybe a bit overdrafted, but I'd say the success he's had justifies the pick. Lubanski? He was well thought of, and was considered a top 10-15 player. Yes, he was probably taken is some respect due to signability, but we got a top prospect. Maybe Stodolka? Seems as if some "experts" were questioning that pick.

All three of the players you mentioned weren't worthy of the selection, and I'm talking pre-draft. Maybe Stodolka? WTF? Butler, of course. He didn't have a position coming out.

The Royals aren't in this position b/c they were doing things the right way in the draft.

As I've said numerous times, judge the organization by it's current staff and decisions, not on decisions that were made generations ago by Herk Robinson and Allard Baird. That's just f'n reeruned.
