Give me your best salary negotiation advice

I have a job interview tomorrow for a position that is very intriguing to me. The company is aware of what my salary expectations are, but the recruiter that I spoke with said that my salary expectations were on the higher range of what they generally offer for this position.

When would salary be discussed? Is it good to talk about at the end of the interview, or wait for them to make an offer?

I've been with the same employer for about 8 years so I'm a little behind the game. Any help would be appreciated.

I have little interest in doing so at this point in my life. Raises and bonuses are unpredictable. My supervisor and I are close, and I appreciate the relationship I've built with her directly.

Job B does offer some benefits that job A does not. Better benefits (to some degree), better 401k matching by 2%. It's also a project where we're starting something new, which greatly interests me. Frankly I don't know what the raise/bonus structure looks like yet. It's also an unknown what my supervisor or the people above me will look like.

I'm at a job now where I make a good salary. As much as I'd love this new position, I know what I'm worth, and I have a bottom dollar in mind.

If you don't mind sharing, what type of position were you interviewing for? If I remember correctly, your background is in the social services field?

I was just offered a position back in government. It will be tough leaving my current position at a university, but it is a significant bump in pay and better leverages my expertise in healthcare and disability policy analysis.

I wish you the best of luck with your next round of interviews, TLO.

Best advice I can give is to apply for all jobs in your field over the next week and see how many offers you get. Total packages.

Then you can gauge what’s out there. If you get an outstanding offer (and you might) take that offer back to your employer as what your expectations are. Do so in a “I love it here. I want to continue providing results, but life has become more expensive during the last few years and I’d like to discuss my compensation.” Kind of way.

That will allow you to have time to make the best decision for you snd your family.

I really like the concept of BATNA- “best alternative to a negotiated agreement”. If your present job is fine, but you are looking to advance in terms of responsibility or salary, that gives you greater leverage than if you hate your job and want out yesterday. Do you possess skills or knowledge that are rare or in high demand? Better position. But if it is a position that requires considerable on the job training, your negotiating position is inferior. Finally, the conversation of salary and benefits should be broached by the hiring company, not you, and if they ask what you expect, I believe it is fair to ask what is the salary range they have offered for the position, even if money is your prime motivator.

I was informed today by an unofficial source that they are bypassing 2nd interviews and are choosing me for the position.

This pretty much gives me ALL the leverage in negotiations, right?

It doesn't hurt to ask, it's not like they're going to say 'uh, nevermind'.

I usually ask for the salary range of the position... it's good to be on the same page instead of just throwing around numbers.
