SOME DON’T VIEW STAFFORD, SANCHEZ AS TOP TEN PICKS

Our initial mock draft of the year created plenty of consternation among folks who regard such matters even more importantly that some of our other readers regard their chosen religion.

And, yes, we were trying to make a point with the thing. At this stage, none of the draft experts (i.e., guys who couldn’t get or hold a scouting job with an NFL team and who instead tried to create a niche in the media for the stuff no NFL team would pay them to do) know with any degree of certainty what will occur on draft day.

Apart from the premature nature of prognosticating the events of late April is the fact that every NFL team makes its own decisions for its own reasons, especially in round one. Some draft based on need. Others take the best available player. And when 32 teams have different views on how those available players are ranked from best to worst, the stage is set for all sorts of screwy stuff.

We could have created even more consternation by dropping Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford and USC quarterback Mark Sanchez out of the top ten. In some war rooms, it’s an accurate view of the two players.

Said one source, “In other years those guys aren’t first-round picks. Stafford played well in 2007 but was horrible in 2008. He stunk in all their big games.”

The source specifically pointed to the contests against Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee. Based on the numbers, Stafford was bad against Florida, mediocre against Alabama, and decent against Tennessee.

“He is an average leader at best,” the source opined. “When you put a lot of pressure on him, he pees his pants. Detroit has a new front office, but if they take him then it’s the same old stuff. I guarantee that if he goes in the top 20 he will never play to the level he was drafted.

“What he has is physical skills,” the source added. “He has a strong arm and is athletic but he also has poor instincts and poor decision-making.”

Some might disagree with that assessment. But the point is that, when you’ve got a bunch of different folks assessing the same players, there will be significant variations from person to person.

“As far as Sanchez,” the source said, “he is a more solid choice. He played in a pro style offense. He’s accurate and has a good arm. He’s smart and a leader.

“The negative is he was a one-year starter. Tell me the last time a quarterback who was a one-year starter in college made it big in the NFL? Game time is huge with quarterbacks. Granted, from a money standpoint he made the right decision, but from the standpoint of having a top career, his decision has to be questioned.”

(And, no, our source isn’t Pete Carroll.)

So there you have it. Evidence of how the viewpoints on supposedly top players can diverge dramatically. It makes the process of predicting draft picks even more precarious. So, in the end, we think the final tally of players taken two months from now would presently seem every bit as goofy and unrealistic as some viewed our initial Pre-Combine Mock Draft.

Curry motivated by thought of being No. 1 overall pick

Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry finished his final scouting-combine drill — the 60-yard shuttle — and launched into a somersault, landing on his back near the 35-yard line on the Lucas Oil Stadium field turf and throwing his arms out wide as he looked up at the ceiling.

Exhale. It’s over.

“It’s always been a childhood dream to come out here to the NFL combine and perform,” Curry said, still breathing heavy from the final drill. “For so long, I watched all of the other athletes perform, and I always said, ‘I want to be like him. I want to be better than him.’ I’m just amazed by the talent that has been out here and to know that I was out here now and somebody out in the world is saying, ‘Wow.’

“To be able to go through all the drills, and then at the end of the agility, I finished strong. It’s been a great, great five days. Then a somersault to top it off.”

The linebacker likely strengthened his resume — and his ascending draft status — with an impressive performance Monday at the combine. He finished first among linebackers in four of the six drills tested — 40-yard dash (4.56 seconds), vertical jump (37 inches), broad jump (10 feet, 4 inches) and 60-yard shuttle (11.35 seconds). He also displayed his blend of size and speed during linebacker drills.

The buzz at the combine is that Curry is the “safest” pick in the draft.

While that sounds like a media term, the affable Curry said his favorite part of the combine experience was having lunch with members of the Detroit Lions, who could make him the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft. Curry said that experience — and the thought of being the top pick — motivated him as he competed in drills.

“Just to know that they’re considering taking a linebacker No. 1 overall … just that whole thought process is amazing,” Curry said. “I came out here today with that in the back of my head.

“It did motivate me to know that if I put on a good enough show, maybe they may feel like they could build a team around a linebacker. Add me with Ernie Sims, and maybe we could make some big plays.”

Next up for Curry is a week off, followed by some more time in Phoenix to train for his March 23 Pro Day.

I'm not sure what that second sentence was suppose to read, but do you or anyone know what those numbers are? I don't intend on slinging garbage all over to reach it, just curious when I might expect that sort of stuff.

"SUCK IT!" - have to admit, that made me laugh and actually for some reason recall days of 1997 when I was watching the NWO reign over the WCW, but only after Seinfeld.

That whole "dinner with the Lions" thing may prove to be pretty transparent. I don't believe they did that with anyone else nearly as publicly....this could be some solidification to them considering Cassel too...?

You've all the freedom in the world with the #1 overall pick though, I wonder if they'll make their selection early like with Long last year?

If Detroit really wants to rebound in to "at least someone will pay some green to check us out" respectability at home, Curry and Cassel would be a great way to do it.
From what I understand, they already have a good young receiver for Cassel, and Curry with Ernie Sims could be a strong draw as well.

It's a good instant improvement. The Chiefs need to go a different way, and I believe they're going to do it. I still believe to this day that the only reason we have Pioli( and Haley to a lesser degree )is because the Chiefs are the cleanest slate in the NFL. If you wanted to build YOUR TEAM without the hassle of in-place vets and a lot of headaches and drama, there was only one real choice; Kansas City.

It's a "from the top on down" build, and the next logical "hire" is a Quarterback.
If Curry goes to Detroit, it's a huge advantage to us because we get to really evaluate both QB candidates, and make a true choice.

And I've said it a million times; I will truly be happy with either guy.

This is all good news....of the rumor variety sort of, but good news nonetheless!!! And with what little buzz that has made its way out, it sounds like they love Curry, and could definitely use Cassel exactly as you've advertised above.

I'm currently working on a quick mock draft - partly so that you guys can pick it apart, but this really changes my outlook for the entire draft, and honestly, it only gets better for KC....I'd LOVE it if this works out...

Thank you. Here's the thing with KC:

We haven't had the experience, in the entire history of the KC Chiefs, of seeing this franchise run the way that Scott Pioli has said that he will run it. After the Chiefs SB win back in the day, everything started going down, and kept going down until Carl and Marty arrived.

They brought respectability back to the franchise, but a lot of patchwork-type decisions and drafting, contract negotiations shot to hell, and then just general apathy landed us where we are now.
What I'm trying to say is, it's not so much about wins and losses at this point; it's about dissecting every element of the franchise, and starting down the road to success using proven methods that yield results.

When Pioli says "I build teams", I hear "I'm going to find the best matches between positions that rely on each other( both technically and mindset-wise ), and slowly bring that team together until they would kill and die for each other".

And that takes time.

But man, when that kind of groundwork is laid and comes to fruition?
Opponent better look out, and step the **** BACK.

I agree. What I'm looking so forward to is that first momentum shift where the rest of the NFL looks to KC and says "Uh Oh".
You're about 10 years younger than me, and though you got your groove on in school during Vermeil, I can't begin to describe what it was like to be with other fans in a bar or at the game when DT was tearing shit up; it was just electric.
And the very thought that we could surpass even that and achieve a Greatness For The Ages....I can't even wrap my head around that at this point.

Kansas City is a great place. I think a lot of people with not much sense of history think it's just another Toledo or Dayton in the mid west. It's not. A lot of greatness and worldly influences have converged there, and been created there.

I'm ready for the Chiefs to raise the bar on an epic scale, and attain true immortality alongside the other great people and institutions that have come from the place I call Home.
