Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.

Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

But it doesn't mean you don't put the tag on him anyway and try to leverage a trade out of it. He doesn't have to play on the thing; you can trade his rights and in the process give him and his agent authority to discuss the matter with other teams.

You can do that whole thing pretty cordially.

Just doesn't seem like it's worthwhile for him to pull a Derek Carr "Nah, I'm not gonna do any of that. If you won't pay me X, you're gonna have to cut me because I'm not discussing contracts as part of a franchise tag/trade and I'm not playing on the tag here..."

I'd say it's either trade for one, or draft one.

And even if they choose draft one, it doesn't mean that they're waiting till 31 to do it.

We're also dealing with a kid like OBJ who has an agent who has never done this before. For all we know, OBJ picked this guy because he'll dig his feet in the sand based on what OBJ wants...with no compromise.

I could see it for a year as they draft a tackle at 31. Give him the Fisher treatment for a year and swap over.

Both tackle spots addressed for 2023.
