Royals sign 4th rounder Tim Melville

http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/new...t=.jsp&c_id=kc

Royals come to terms with Tim Melville
08/15/2008 11:49 AM ET
MLB.com

KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals today announced they have reached an agreement with fourth-round draft choice Tim Melville. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We are very pleased to announce the signing of Tim Melville. Tim, his family, and advisor Jason Cook remained committed to this process from start to finish," said Deric Ladnier, Royals Senior Director of Scouting. "Tim is a very talented young man and we are excited that we were able to add a player of his caliber to the Royals organization."

Melville is the 2007 Aflac National High School Player of the Year recipient. The 6'5" right-hander from Wentzville, Mo. finished his senior campaign with an 8-1 record, a 2.56 ERA, and 89 strikeouts in 52 innings. As a junior, Melville compiled a 10-1 mark with a 0.89 ERA which helped Holt High School reach the Missouri Class 4-A finals.

We have until 11pm cst to sign Hosmer and Ryan Curl...glad we got Mellville, considered at the 15th slot in the 1st round but dropped due to signability issues.

Nope. Dig up any post I've made about this year's draft and I've been very positive about it, largely because of the Melville selection. But you're right, I'm going to continue to want to hold Glass accountable.
To further support the tide is turning during this draft thought, the Royals also tried to sign their 7th round pick for $1M+, but the guy stiffed them and is going to Vandy.

There were several other players signed above the typical amount in the round they were taken also (Keubler comes to mind). Regardless what happens with Hosmer (I'd be shocked if he doesn't sign), this draft absolutely signals a change in the strategy.

That's a great point about the 7th rounder. I'd heard that but forgotten. You're absolutely right.

Hosmer is a major piece. It would be a major blow not to get the #3 overall pick signed.

David Glass has been the one constant since the death of Mr. K. Why do you think these GM's have had to worry about $ leading to signability? Do you really think Baird, for example, didn't want to draft the individual whom he thought had the most talent? This hangs on Glass.

The Royals aren't in this position b/c they were doing things the right way in the draft.
Lubanski was Baseball America's 9th rated player. Butler was arguably a signability pick, but again, his success justifies the pick IMO. My "maybe Stodolka" comment was that he was the last egregious signability pick in the 1st round.

It's also hard to be positive because the Royals are just snake bitten when it comes to the draft, things seem to never work out.

Ok. I understand about Stodolka. Lubanski was a reach at #4, but perhaps not as nasty as others.

Butler's success? Huh? The jury is still out, right? I'd hardly consider anything to be a success yet. Admittedly he's still VERY young and could definitely develop into something.

The fact that he dominated every level in the minors and has had some success in the big leagues at the age of 22 qualifies as a success (so far). We'll see if he builds on it.

Ok. But a 22-year-old DH isn't probably most people's definition of success. That said, I don't understand the organization's negative view of his skills in the field.

I think the guy can be a serviceable first baseman, but why he's not playing there and Gload is unfortunately is an entirely different conversation.

Does it involve the manager being a dumbass?

I am truly shocked that there are still KC area fans willing to fight pretty hard to defend this organization (and in doing so are largely defending David Glass). Can you imagine the excitement if we'd been actually trying to win since Mr. K died?

It's like defending Carl Peterson.
