Chiefs Chiefs confident Sammy Watkins, Patrick Mahomes are “starting to sync” - Page 7

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins hasn’t caught a pass through the team’s first two preseason games and he failed to come back for a Patrick Mahomes pass that could have been a touchdown.

Coach Andy Reid noted that Watkins needs to do a better on plays like that, but he didn’t show much overall concern about how Watkins is fitting into the offense in his first year with the team. Reid said he loves Watkins’ “intensity on learning all the little, small things” and has seen that translate into good things at practice.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy had a similar take and said that he’s seen signs that Watkins and Mahomes are striking up a strong relationship.

“When it’s all said and done, Sammy is doing a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said, via ESPN.com. “He’s doing a great job. He’s accepted the challenge because we’re not just playing him at one position. He’s accepted the challenge of learning all three across the board. We want versatile football players. I know everybody wants to talk about what’s happening on the field on game day, but I will say this: Their communication, their rhythm is starting to sync.”

Mahomes agreed with the coaches about Watkins making strides even if they haven’t shown up in games. That’s easier to sell in preseason than in the regular season, which leaves the Chiefs with a couple of weeks to get everyone in line.

I’ve been a Jimmy Ward fan since he came out and I wanted to pair him with Berry, so I’m with you there.

Yeah, I dunno if they're ready to move on from those guys or what though Ward would be tough to get under our cap unless they cover some.
He's young though so that's nice.

Nkemdiche is another one that I thought about.

Darby would be fantastic, but I just find it hard to believe the Eagles are shopping him with one more cheap year on his deal. At worst he walks and they get a nice comp pick.

Comp picks aren't everything that they're cracked up to be. Yeah they could let Darby go expecting a comp pick but what if a free agent is in the pool that they didn't plan on? Now they lose that comp pick because they signed the other guy. Take the pick that you're guaranteed for a player that you don't have any plans on keeping.

This defense could be really good if Veach could add a decent CB and DL. Even just a good CB could be enough to make this unit potentially top 10.

I trust Nelson to be at least a solid #3 CB.

I am bullish on the LB corps and the Dline is one decent 3-4 end away from being a strong unit IMO.

Could you imagine if we had a guy like...idk...Marcus Peters to go with Fuller and Berry? Maybe even sign an Iloka or a Reid. Or drafted one of the numerous highly touted corners.
