Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

MAYBE they get lucky in the draft and have a rookie LT who surprises and is ready to handle that right away. Boom. Put Taylor right back on the right side (where he would still be a massive upgrade from Wylie).
I'm just saying I think there's a decent shot Andrew Wylie is gonna end up getting a 15 aav from like the Bears.

They don't want to pay $20M guaranteed in 2023 and have nobody under contract in 2024.

I dont know about that. If he's been cornered, he may have had no other choice but to release him. OBJ basically had all the leverage.

Everyone should get comfortable with the idea that Anton Harrison or Broderick Jones is our LT next year because well it could happen.

He has Andy Reid written all over him even if we sign/trade for a LT

I don’t pretend to know too much about Jawaan Taylor’s abilities as a pro, but PFF had him graded as 136 out of 137 tackles in run blocking (and it looks like his grades have been falling). OBJ was 38th.

He was 40th in pass blocking (grade improving over prior seasons), just ahead of OBJ at 31.

One thing about Jawaan Taylor is that he's a much better pass blocker than a run blocker.

He's like the completely opposite of Brown, which makes him a better fit.

None of this was sprung on Veach. We dealt with this last offseason and he was tagged. There was always a possibility of a repeat. Brown wasn’t suddenly going to back off his demands. If anything with KC winning the SB and the line giving up zero sacks, his value went up. Veach could have just kept the tag on him. He did not so I feel like he has a plan B and always did if/when this happened.

It's weird to look at twitter and see people saying a deal will get done because the Chiefs have no other options.
