VARSITY
Patriots' defense last night

Romo touched on this, but they had an interesting approach that looked like it gave Mahomes a bit of trouble at times.

They only had 3 DL, and their 2 DE's rushed up the field and held the sides of the pocket, creating a "box" around Mahomes to prevent him from rolling/escaping/doing his magic tricks. They then kept everyone else in coverage in his line of sight to limit his windows and throwing lanes.

The plus was he had lots of time in the pocket, the minus was he had no where to go to help his WR's get open via scrambling, reducing his throwing lanes/windows.

Thankfully our WR corps is very fast and can get open, but again, with reduced windows, it made it harder on Mahomes.

I would not be surprised if we saw this set up again this season a few times.

And Reid will counter that. He is the offensive equivalent to Belechick. When has Belechick ever been able to shut down a Reid offense a full game since he’s been in KC?

If you create a special hybrid defense just for one game and Mahomes, you''ll probably have some success.

The question: how often can you do that?

Bill has always been good at that. His defenses are chameleon-like in that respect. Can't think of too many other DCs that have that ability from week to week.

Mahomes throws two balls three inches shorter and the Chiefs win 40-10.

Mahomes missed a few throws. It happens.

Nothing was “figured out.”

Patrick Mahomes is a slightly below avg QB in terms of the Wonderlic score. Hes smarter than the avg NFL player but I think photographic memory is pushing it.

The only time you have to be a threat to run is 2nd and 2, 3rd and 2 and shit like that. Otherwise you are giving up expected yards and points. Some coach will come around soon and literally never run on 1st and 10 or 2nd and 10. There just is no reason to do it unless your QB is Sam Darnold.

Would not running EVER on 1st and 10 or 2nd and 10 lower your passing efficiency on those downs? Yes, slightly. But not enough to justify ever running instead of passing on those downs. Compare it to 3rd and 10 where every idiot in the building knows you are passing it EVERYTIME and teams are still more effective passing it on those downs than they are running it on 1st and 10. And the run on 1st and 10 even has the advantage of catching the defense off guard because they dont know if its a run or pass.

Hell, maybe even a guy like D'Ernest Johnson would get it done. I don't know.
I had the same thought when watching the highlights of that game.

Hunt is faster than CEH, makes more people miss and breaks more tackles, and I still say he has hips that move like Barry Sanders, giving him great balance and allowing for him to make cuts or moves on a dime. And we know he can be a receiver out of the backfield.

Wonderlic is the most overrated thing ever.

Some QBs are just smarter and process faster. Mahomes is high end.

This is the problem. Biggest obstacle this Chiefs team will have to overcome this season. Mahomes is constantly under pressure. We talked about it a little in the off season. The offensive line is shit. It goes overlooked because Mahomes is so damn good.

This is the 3rd time in a row that Belichick managed to stifle us in the first half. The dude is just smarter than everybody else in terms of defence. If other teams were capable of pulling this off we would have been seeing more of it a long time ago. Bill is the only one who truly understands how to slow our offence down.

That's why those who think Buffalo is winning the AFC East are crazy. Buffalo matches up terribly against NE.

Your constant pining for Kareem Hunt is on par with OKChiefs/Red Dawg bitching about our CBs. You do realize that, right?

Mahomes was described as having 'eidetic memory'. Same as Favre. Well, maybe there's more than one type of eidetic memory, I don't know. But both were described as having it.

On Offense, they wanted to run and eat clock as well, to keep him on the sideline.

It almost worked, and we still won by 16, because we are a complete team. Huge punts from Townsend, big plays when we needed them on offense, and ball-hawk secondary combined with timely sacks on throwing downs from the defense.

It can't all be on the offense every game.

We'll take these learnings and apply them to future games.
We won by 16 because Pats backup QBs suck. Otherwise who knows who wins that game.
