** OFFICIAL: "Do You Believe in God and an Afterlife?" Thread**

Simple question.

I'm just curious how representative this place is, compared with mainstream America on the question. A few threads of late, just got me wondering....

Please feel free to discuss.

I understand your point, but actually...even with that demographic, we aren't too far off from the "average" of mainstream America, which is surprising to me.

Like you seem to believe, I thought we'd be skewed more the non-believer/atheist direction.

Heh.

% of people that serve God: 10-20% (at best)
% of people who go to Church weekly: 40%
% of people who believe in God: 95%
% of people who know they are sinners: 100%

Regardless of the demographics, most people know in their conscience that there is a reckoning coming. I have been in combat with men facing death daily, and I can tell you that human will, human pride and human arrogance runs very deep. Not quite as deep as the tender mercies of God, however, and I have seen the Lord work powerful miracles among the toughest men in the world.

I believe, and live accordingly. [ 12 ] 11.88%
I believe, should strive accordingly....better than I do. [ 45 ] 44.55%

That seems fairly representative to me, regardless of the assumed demographic by which this place is populated.

I don't believe in god as he/she/it is definted and confined by any religion I've yet encounted, nor do I believe that any "reckoning," biblical or otherwise, is approaching, unless, of course, mankind brings one upon ourselves. I do believe, however, in being good for the sake of goodness. Because in my personal moral code it is "right".

Whether there's a reward post-burial for such actions or not is a completely moot point to me.

I am a veteran, former Armor CPT from 4 yrs of peace time duty...and agree human will, pride, and arrogance run deep. No combat, so you got me there. Guess, I'm SOL when it comes it's time for pie. But I also believe in God's mercies and miracles. No doubt in my mind.

The way I read the poll, so far is...
60-75% BELIEVE, or want to believe...but are human, subject to backsliding and doubts. Not bad in today's secularized and narcissistic world. Especially, as you said, among this demographic.

Out of curriosity: are you an evangelical...literalist/fundamentalist? FWIW, I don't consider that a bad thing; it just lends perspective.

Keg therefore, believes in Santa Claus ("so be good for goodness' sake"). I commend you for your transparency, Kyle. You are actually ahead of many planeteers by patronizing the venerable Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra (4th Century).

Mmmkay.

Although we did learn about that fellow in sunday school a couple of decades back.

It scares me that I'm old enough to use those words. "Decades back."

Goverment is a mans way of controlling man.

I am Church of Christ-Penecostal-Southern Baptist, converted Lutheran....who, in private moments sees Deism as making the most sense, in the context of history and the time-and-space continuum. I believe in the awesome power and compassion of God, and the wonder of Free Will he granted to us....yet Christianity works for me, in my time and culture.

My thesis is on Resilient Youth...which is awe-inspiring in the context of Free Will...

Then get right with God. That's the only way to have peace about these issues. God is real, and He loves you. What's to be afraid of? Unless you love something evil (that is the common condition of all men). Not every Christian is ready to fry you. But mercy comes undeserved from God, regardless of what one Christian sect says.

I would be a deist as well, were I not more comfortable with the mantle of agnostic.

I generally don't call myself atheist, if it's a serious religious discussion, because I do recognize the possibility or a higher being (or group thereof).

Now, if joe on the street asks me what religion I am, I generally just say "atheist" becaust it's the simplest answer...
