Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Exactly.

There's a reason they didn't tag him. It could be as simple as them just wanting to move on. It could also be that they are pretty sure they can work out a deal so they didn't want to tie up the cap.

I'm just acknowledging possibilities. Not talking about probabilities at this point but if I were a betting man, I'd agree with the majority here that he's gone.

Here's the deal. Everybody wants to act like OBJ is definitely gone but that Veach has a plan in place.

It's very possible both of things are true. It's also possible BOTH of those things are false.

We have no idea what actually transpired in those meetings and until he signs somewhere, we won't. There's no foregone conclusions to be had. At least not yet.
I thought about some of these possibilities last night. And there could be some truth here.

But it happened really fast. Veach made a comment about going to talk to OBJ, and hours later (?) OBJ is released?

It feels like Veach said the word "tag" and OBJ said "**** that." Paraphrasing a little for brevity's sake, because I can be a wordy bitch.

Anyway, anything is possible, and I'm about the last person to ever predict anything having to do with the draft correctly, but it feels like OBJ will not play for the Chiefs in 2023.

Which I think is fine. We were going to have to overpay him anyway, and in the process maybe lose CJ, which is unacceptable.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I think that OBJ really wants to hit that market and be proven right. And more than likely...it's going to happen. There are teams that have the cap space and the need for a LT.

That’s fair, and I actually wouldn’t be either.

Some years it seems like there are guys who people expect to get huge deals and it doesn’t happen. Maybe Orlando’s film isn’t as impressive as he thinks around the league. Perhaps the Chiefs know this and want Brown to go see that for himself.

Only problem is it only takes one dipshit organization to ruin that.

Anybody say no to this:

Quote:
The Chiefs trade for LT Laremy Tunsil (Texans) and a 3rd round pick for the team's 1st, the Tyreek Hill 4th, and the team's original 7th round pick, as well as a 2024 3rd round pick. The Chiefs then pay Tunsil 4 years, $95m, $50m guaranteed.
Chiefs would get:
Tunsil
2023 3rd round pick

Texans would get:
2023 1st round pick
2023 4th round pick
2023 7th round pick
2024 3rd round pick
cap space

Where are you getting "released" from? It's simply Veach not wanting to tie up $20+ million in cap space right before FA begins. It would only hurt the Chiefs.

He wasn't technically released. They declined to tag him so he becomes a FA at the beginning of the new season.

And yes, it happened really fast. Which means one possibility is that they know there's no way they're agreeing on numbers. It's also possible that it went that fast because they know exactly how they want to handle it and they're still looking to bring him back.

There is zero chance that Orlando and Chiefs come to a long term deal this week. They Chiefs have given a number that OBJ has rejected. Now OBJ needs to find his number elsewhere (He probably already has assurances, in truth... agents and executives talk). If his market is softer than expected - then maybe he comes back to us...but I wouldn't hold your breath.

If one team is willing to offer that then tagging him makes sense.

I use the example of an arranged marriage. Why would Brown agree to marry a guy that Veach arranges for him to marry even if he's rich when he could not agree and test the waters and marry who he wants and provides the same or better benefits?

Also while no team may offer him what he wants, they could still offer him more than KC is willing to pay.

If I remember right, didn't Tyreek refuse to go to the NYJ even though they offered a better pick? I might be mistaken, but I feel like that was one of the reasons why KC traded him to Miami.

Exactly. Using the tag makes no sense if they know he's not coming back.

By the same token, using the tag makes no sense if they think he IS coming back.

That's all I'm saying.

Yep. Guarantee that OBJ's agent has talked to teams and his market is looking great right now if he makes it there.

Veach came at OBJ with his offer, saw how far off they were and chose not to tag him.

I wouldn't mind that at all. Unfortunately I am not the Texans GM. If I were I highly doubt I would like that.

Change from what?

The only thing we KNOW about this negotiation was that they couldn't get it done last year.

We have no idea what the negotiating positions are now. We're just assuming that things haven't changed since last year. They absolutely have.
