College athletes and money

So there is a big deal over college athletes (Jeremy Bloom amongst many others) getting sponsors to play in X games or ski or whatever outside of school, basically to use their physical abilities to make money.....my question is where is the difference between making money with your physical abilities and going on a game show (Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune) and using thier brains to make money?

The NCAA is a money making scam. They could give two shits about academics or upholding the standards of 'amatuerism'. They are just there to make sure all the money goes to the schools, and that they get their cut.

I'm not clear on how this whole thing works, but to my understanding, that what Jermey Bloom is doing, is professional stuff. The NCAA doesn't condone athletes who are in the professional league, but that I not 100% sure.

As for the Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune, if my memory serves me right, didn't they have a scholarship fund for that certain person who is with a player or just directly for the school?

I think the problem with Bloom was that he was going to get endorsements, not a salary. IIRC, Ricky "I smoke two joints" Williams played minor league baseball while in college so he could pay for his sister's college (he was technically a walk-on). The NCAA is more concerned with Bloom because much of his prominence (and thus, money-making ability) is due to playing college football. Not saying the NCAA is right...
