If it's the right candidate I agree with you.
But there is no one of that ilk available at the moment.<BR> |

I don't like that as much, I think Holmgren has begun to prove that he can't seperate the jobs and is losing because of it. Give me a good coach who has a lot of say in who and what kind of players he wants, but doesn't have to deal with the advertising and all that kind of crap. Also I think it is best when the Coach is not part of the negotiations, easier to seperate the anomosity between players and coaches when the anomosity is between the GM and the player.
Morphius Might just be me. |

I can't think offhand of any case where the combined GM/HC position has worked. (The jury is still out in Seattle)
I think they need to be seperate to counter-balance each other. It also allows the player to seperate them and the feelings that may result from tough contract talks. |

CK - wasn't Rat GM/HC when Denver did it and I would consider Denny Green successful in Minny. Morph - good point on the seperation stuff - now I don't know how I feel??? |

The three biggest names, recently, that come to mind, Parcells, Johnsen, and Holmgren, none have won the SB with the teams they held this title. Of course, the jury is still out on Holmgren, but is it coincidental, that burnout accelerated after getting such a job?

I thought Minny had a GM. It may be for the "other" responsibilities, but I think they do. Can't remember much about the Rat, but remember Bowlen is involved there also.

WC,
I agree with you on having one guy do it all but I think there is only one guy who could really do it. I say give Parcells anything he wants to get him here. I believe that we are in the superbowl within 2 years if we could get him sighned. A team starts with it's leaders. How many times have we seen a coach take a mediocre to good team and make them champions. We have been fairly close so many times. This IS the missing link. BIG DADDY Not letting go of this Parcells thing. |

Big Daddy, I would vote for Parcells in a New York minute, but that is the operative word there, New York, not KC. I don't believe his ego would allow him to move to a city with less limelight. There can be turnarounds, just with coaching, look at New Orleans this year. They have done it with a new coach and GM. Speaking of which, do we not now employ their old GM.

I was under the impression that the Vikes had a GM. If I'm wrong I stand corrected.
As for the Broncs, I put an asterick by that one. Yes Shanny has done a fine job with Greise, TD, Gary, etc. But he won the SB with Elway. Elway was there long before Shanny. Chicken or egg? I'll give him his due but I'll insist for now that the emporer has no clothes. (or at least damm flimsy ones) |

Whenever I think of a combo GM/HC, Dave Wannstedt immediately comes to mind. He puked all over himself with that title. There are very few that can carry the weight effectively, and no one in the current market that seems to make sense for us.
Given the above, I would vote to separate the 2 jobs, but get 2 personalities that are compatible for Christs sake. |

I'll pop the top on a can of worms. Would Marty be capable of doing it?

Dave- I believe Marty can he'll put Kurt back where he should have been in the 1st place STs. he'll find a proper coaching staff like he did in the 90's.
