Training camp report and DJ knocks the hell out of Trich

TRAINING CAMP REPORT - Saturday Evening Practice
By D.B. Former

OVERVIEW:

Tony Gonzalez left practice halfway through, limping significantly. He walked right past me on the way to the locker room, while escorted by a trainer. He turned to look at me, and he wore a look of distress. I never got the low-down on what the injury was, but I heard a trainer say
he got hit in the leg.

Yes, all the rumors are true! The defense is not just fast, but EXTREMELY fast. Both first and second teamers are playing very tough. I saw for myself what Dick Vermeil meant when he said the defense is becoming more and more disruptive. Keyaron Fox is very nice; fast and
an acute attacker... very, very active. He ran with the first team Saturday night, probably rotating with Kendrell Bell. Larry Johnson is a BEAST!

GRUNTIN' & GRINDIN'

This segment features 1-on-1 battles.

RB's -VS- LB's

We start with LB's vs. RB's in man-to-man coverage. The drill sets up with a center, QB and RB, with two dummies simulating the two guards. The LB is lined up at his usual spot, picking up the RB out of the backfield.

* T-Rich -vs- Kendrell Bell -- T-Rich hit the line of scrimmage, flared out to the flats, and caught the pass. He maintained a step on Bell, turned on the jets and Bell never caught him. Winner: T-Rich.
* Gonzalez -vs- Derrick Johnson -- TG hit the seam for about 15 yards, busted out, then back to the inside. He lost DJ for a solid two steps, caught the pass, and was gone. Winner: Gonzalez
* Boomer -vs- McKenzi Smith -- Smith just ran a fly route down the sideline. Boomer is STILL choking off the diesel smoke he inhaled while in Smith's wake. Winner: Smith
* Kawika Mitchell -vs- Larry Johnson -- Mitchell "showed up", just as Gun ordered. Johnson ran a seam route... no jukes, or double moves. Mitchell went step-for-step and broke up the pass 20 yards downfield.
* Priest -vs- Kendrell -- Priest ran an out, and Bell was OUT! Priest smoked him up the sidelines.
* This was nice, DJ -vs- T-Rich -- T-Rich ran an out and caught the pass, but DJ had a forward angle to cut him off, preventing T-Rich from taking it up the field. So instead of pushing him out of bounds, DJ knocked the hell out of T-Rich, BOOM!!! DJ turned and walked away, but it wasn't over, as T-Rich fired a spiral at DJ, hitting him right in the ass. LOL!!!

O-LINEMEN -VS- D-LINEMEN

* Sims bull-rushed John Welbourn to get nice penetration but no sack. Sims looks mighty strong.
* Brian Waters is physical and is a technician at his position. He used all hands and leverage to stall Lional Dalton.
* Willie Roaf basically told Jared Allen "I'm your daddy" two consecutive times. Allen couldn't even gain two yards of penetration against Roaf.
* Sims, on his second runs at Welbourn, used speed. Welbourn was expecting a bull-rush... he got speed and barely touched Sims.
* Chris Bober didn't look stout while playing center. Better hope Casey Wiegmann is healthy all year.

I SEE YOU

Here are my observations during various drills, mainly '11-on-11' and '9-on-7'.

* We'll start with the red zone drills. The defense kicked some MAJOR ass in the red zone battle. I lost count of how many plays were run but the defense won most of them. HOWEVER, on one of the plays when the offense scored a TD, my reaction was OH SH*T!!! The way Larry Johnson ran through Keyaron Fox was CRIMINAL!!! It's a wonder you guys didn't feel that hit back in Kansas City. Fox started on the right side, then shuffled over to the left to fill the hole but didn't have his leverage... BOOM!!! He was counting the stars over River Falls. I think that was more of Johnson looking unbelievably powerful than Fox looking bad.

* Rest assured, Kawika Mitchell is going to "show up" on gameday, especially if he keeps getting better. He's filling up holes with authority. If he isn't making the tackle, he's re-routing the RB, forcing him to stretch outside.

*Sorry Boomer fans, Grigsby is STILL a rookie, I don't care how juiced you get over his "country white boy" quotes. He isn't nearly as instinctive as Mitchell. In fact, he kind of looks like Mitchell last year. All that speed and strength doesn't mean anything if the game isn't natural to you. And right now he must learn how to play in Gun's system.

*Be encouraged with Willie Pile, William Bartee, Kris Wilson, Craphonso Thorpe, Benny Sapp and Sammy Parker. These are some of the young Chiefs who are having a good camp so far.

*In 7-on-7, Craphonso Thorpe smoked Eric Warfield on a fly pattern. Man, Thorpe is fast and will be very, very special for the Chiefs in the future. He and Sammy Parker may be the starting WR's once Kennison retires.

*Speaking of Parker, he made a splendid diving catch over the middle for about 20 yards while covered tightly by Dexter McCleon.

*As much as people talk about the defense, the Chiefs' offense is STILL the Chiefs offense. They're going to get off, no matter what the D does. In this instance, Dante Hall caught a 10-yard out against zone coverage. He was trapped by Dexter, Greg Wesley, and Sammy Knight. So what did he do? He flashed back to that Denver game three years ago when he looked like the "human joystick". He got busy and busted loose up the middle for a TD.

THEY SAID IT, NOT ME

Here are a couple of random quotes.

"He slapped the fu*k out of me man. Hell yeah I'm fightin' him." Lional Dalton after starting a fight with Chris Bober because he was head-slapped.

"Boomer, either you're going to get it right or your ass ain't going to play on Sundays." Who else, but Gunther.

former db's reports on Sims are encouraging.

I'll wait till I see it myself, but there does still seem to be hope.

Cool. Nice to get the updates.

The Thorpe news differs a little from the impression I'd gotten from other writeups.

Chiefs’ Gonzalez still out, but foot isn’t broken

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The good news for the Chiefs is that X-rays revealed no break in Tony Gonzalez’s foot. The bad news for coach Dick Vermeil is that he’s running out of tight ends.

Gonzalez left practice Saturday night after he irritated a chronic foot problem, and Vermeil said he’s unsure when Gonzalez will return to practice. Tight end backups — Jason Dunn (back spasms) and Kris Wilson (groin) — also have been sidelined.

Vermeil expected Dunn back for Sunday evening’s practice. Edwin Thompson and Mike Kallfelz are the only other two tight ends on the roster.

“Neither of them have played in the National Football League,” Vermeil said. “The kids struggled last night but they gave us the best that they had and enabled us to practice.”

Gonzalez had offseason foot surgery and missed all of offseason practices. He has been limited to one workout a day to prevent re-aggravating the injury.

The Chiefs held a brief special teams workout late Sunday morning under clear skies. They’ll practice in pads Sunday night.

---------------------

I would also like to point out that the UWRF Chiefs camp website is reporting the injury as a foot sprain.

I heard that it was Art Vandelay, a free agent backup linebacker from Jonestown State. Nailed him when he wasn't looking.
