ESPN Insider: Breakdown of Chiefs vs Broncos

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/featu...Id%3d250926007

Denver's run defense, which ranks 22nd in the NFL, has not lived up to expectations so far after two games. That's a big problem with Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson coming to town on Monday night. The Dolphins and Chargers combined for 230 rushing yards and four yards per carry against Denver's defense.

D.J. Williams, Al Wilson and Ian Gold make up one of the most athletic linebacker corps in the NFL. However, the trio as a whole is undersized and does not fend off blockers as well as it should. If the Broncos' front-four is doing a good job of protecting them, Williams, Wilson and Gold will cover more ground than most. But so far, Denver's defensive front has been inconsistent in its discipline and overall play.

Here's the only part that matters:

The Broncos matchup pretty well against the Chiefs. Home field has been a huge advantage in this rivalry. The Broncos have great athleticism at linebacker, which is critical when defending the one-two punch of Holmes and Johnson. Bailey is back to his "shutdown" ways and will give his defense a lot of flexibility because of his ability to take away one-third of the field in coverage. Denver also has been stronger on special teams so far this season.

However, the Chiefs simply have too much explosiveness on offense for the Broncos to keep up. The Broncos have allowed just one running back to post a 100-yard performance at Invesco Field since it opened in 2001, and that was Holmes, who has accomplished the feat twice, in 2002 and 2004. The Chiefs won't put up their usual production on offense but three touchdowns will be enough to emerge victorious against a Denver offense that has scored just two touchdowns in as many games.

The much improved Chiefs' defense will load up versus the run and force Plummer to beat them with his arm. Plummer will make some big plays but he'll make more costly mistakes. Comparatively speaking, this should be a low-scoring affair, and the Chiefs will exit with their undefeated record in tact.

Prediction: Chiefs 24, Broncos 20
