What is the acceptable timeframe?
Between running one's home air conditioning and one's furnace? For me, it's two weeks, minimum. It was 84 degrees on Saturday (AC) and now it's 31 and snowing. The wife is threatening to take the kids to my parents if I don't allow her to turn on the heat. I'm refusing.

Is 58 degrees REALLY that cold?

To your question, I'd never let it get to 58 in my house cause it'd be worth turning on the heat to stop my wife's complaining. I could live with it though.

Normally you'd get away with that just by default and the seasons.

The extremes you're experiencing are a result of global warming so you better just deal with it and turn on the heat.

Once we're all riding bikes to work things will be back to normal.
