and their offensive line:

NFL BEARS BITS
Knee injury likely to sideline Jones

BY K.C. JOHNSON AND JOHN MULLIN
Published October 11, 2005

The Bears issued no official word on the severity of injuries to Thomas Jones, Ruben Brown and John Tait on Monday, but signs don't look as promising as hoped.

A MRI test on Jones' right knee revealed a stretched lateral collateral ligament. The results are being sent to noted surgeon James Andrews for a second opinion, but it's likely Jones will miss Sunday's game against Minnesota.

Shortly after Brown painted an optimistic picture about his injured left pectoral muscle, coach Lovie Smith offered a different view.

"He didn't tear it completely, which is good," Smith said. "You never know how long it will take."

Asked if that meant Brown's MRI test had revealed a partial tear, Smith demurred.

"He didn't tear it completely," he repeated. "I'll just say that. You go from there."

Brown carried a shopping bag as he left Halas Hall.

"I've had a torn pec before," the guard said. "This one doesn't really feel like a torn pec. My range of motion is a lot better than it was [Sunday]. [Sunday] I couldn't even hold this bag in my hand. Now I can. I can raise my arm. I'm feeling good about the way things feel."

Offensive line stability has been integral to the Bears' success in rushing the football. Roberto Garza replaced Brown and struggled early by committing a face-mask penalty and allowing a sack.

But Garza played while the Bears marched 93 yards on 12 plays for their lone touchdown drive, with Jones rushing seven times for 73 yards.

Tait blocked on that drive but later left with a sprained left ankle. Smith said the left tackle, who wore a walking boot, is day-to-day.

Jones has three straight 100-yard rushing games, so losing him would be a big blow. If he's out, would Cedric Benson start?

"Cedric is next in the rotation, but I was pleased with what Adrian Peterson did," Smith said. "He's a good running back."

Toe the line

Smith praised rookie kicker Robbie Gould's performance and said the Bears don't want to carry two kickers on their active roster for long, possibly to open a roster spot for an offensive lineman if Brown or Tait is out.

Doug Brien continues to undergo treatment for his sore back but said Sunday he's nowhere close to kicking. The 12-year veteran could be waived.

"Hopefully, as the trainers continue to treat him he'll get better and we'll have a decision to make," Smith said. "[Gould] was our guy this past week and he did well. I'll take it from there."

Speaking on his weekly radio show on WBBM-AM 780, general manager Jerry Angelo said Brien's prognosis isn't good. For his part, Gould said he's focusing on this week of practice.

"As a rookie, you can't get too excited," he said. "If you do well enough, you never know what can happen. If it doesn't work out here, you can end up on another team. You're really kicking for 32 teams."

Extra points

Smith said Adewale Ogunleye should be fine after experiencing soreness in his ankle on Sunday night. ... Brian Urlacher is tied for the third-most sacks in the NFL with four and leads all linebackers. . . . Even Cleveland players doubted that Carl Ford committed an illegal-motion penalty on a booming Brad Maynard punt that forced a rekick and a 29-yard gain in field position for the Browns' on their first fourth-quarter TD drive. Ford and Smith agreed after film review.

Tiki is a must play in pt/reception leagues, but even this week must play considering your options.

Jamal vs. CLE, after last week's embarassment, just got a big hunch this could be a big game for Jamal.

Anyone vs. the Ain'ts must play, especially the dynamic Dunn.

Jones may not even play, and I'm staying away from ALL Steelers this week. Bus is back, Big Ben is down, Jax D is pretty good, sit em all down.

By the way, that's a helluva RB corp you got there, well done!
