12 y/o with Leukemia needs help -- insurance won't cover treatment

I don't know if this is out of order for the Planet, but I'm posting it. It'd be nice if someone could Sticky it. If it's out of protocol, go ahead and delete. This isn't a hoax guys. I'm just trying to do what I can to help.

There is a 12-year-old boy from Warrensburg, MO (about 45 miles to the east of Kansas City) that was recently diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) -- his name is Nathan Crabtree. He had an allergic reaction to traditional treatments. The doctors' recourse was to use experimental forms of treatment. The problem: his insurance company will not cover experimental treatments.

The Optimist Club of Warresnburg, as well as many area churches, other Optimist clubs, and organizations in the area are desperately trying to raise $300,000 to help this young man receive the treatments he needs.

A link to digitalBURG's story: http://www.digitalburg.com/artman/pu...icle_854.shtml
A link to Nathan's website: http://caringbridge.com/cb/inputSite...=nathan_thomas

We'd like as much help as we can get. Following is information from the flyer being passed out.

Quote:

I used to work with a nurse named Crabtree. She was damn hot. This isn't her kid though.

This Crabtree family needs to contact the Shriners.

Crabtree Family Seeks Supports For Nathan
Jan 13, 2006, 13:26 Special to digitalBURG.com by Kim Godfrey/ Amanda Goodman

Warrensburg, Mo. - The Helping Hand Fund of First Christian Church in Warrensburg is initiating fund-raising efforts to assist 12-year-old Nathan Crabtree, who has been diagnosed with acute myelogeneous leukemia (AML) and needs a special type of bone marrow transplant.

Nathan has been receiving chemotherapy treatments at Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) in Kansas City since Aug. 28, 2005 and he has not gone into remission. The only real hope for Nathan is the bone marrow transplant, but that procedure cannot be done at CMH because of the chromosomal abnormality preventing Nathan from going into remission.

The treatment Nathan needs is at University of Minnesota's Fairview Hospital, a pioneer in bone marrow transplants. Fairview Hospital is one of only two hospitals in the nation where double cord transplants are performed. The Minnesota hospital has evidence of success with this procedure, and Nathan has a very poor prognosis without the transplant.

“We would like to be there as soon as possible,” said Nathan’s father, Lee Crabtree.

Unfortunately, the family’s insurance carrier, Coventry Insurance of Kansas, includes neither hospital that performs the double cord transplant in their provider network. With no insurance coverage, the hospital will not admit Nathan without a deposit of $307,500, about half of the $615,000 total cost for the treatment and 100 days of post-treatment care.

Coventry made their decision not to cover Nathan's care on Dec. 23, 2005.

“That was my Christmas present,” said Lee. The reason Coventry does not want to support the Crabtree family is because the treatment is an experiment and the hospital is out of their networks. “If they would just help with a small portion of the bill, we could already be there,” Lee lamented.

“We take things one day at a time because we never know what can happen tomorrow,” he said. Lee and his wife Tammy take turns being at the hospital with Nathan to continue structure in their daughter's life. “Nathan has done extremely well all with his spirits up.”

Nathan and his family keep a journal describing his experiences as a way of sharing their thoughts on this journey toward a medical miracle.

CMH provides Nathan with a teacher when he feels well enough, who helps him with take-home assignments provided by his sixth grade teachers from Warrensburg Middle School.

First Christian Church will host a benefit spaghetti dinner and auction on Feb. 4. Dinner will be from 5:30- 7 p.m., accompanied by a silent auction. The live auction will begin at 7 p.m. with Densil Allen as the auctioneer.

First Christian Church has requested helpful citizens to donate items for the auction, which can be delivered to the church at 101 E. Gay St., Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Cash donations to help Nathan can be done by sending checks payable to The First Christian Church, Helping Hand Fund, Nathan Crabtree Project, 101 E. Gay St., Warrensburg, MO 64093. First Christian Church will provide a receipt for the tax-deductible contributions at the end of the year.

For more information, please feel free to contact the church office at 660-747-6815 or Kim Godfrey at 660-429-1952 or 660-909-4592.

Lee wishes to extend thanks to the family and community, who have provided extensive support.
