What size TV is appropriate for 9' viewing distance?

I am trying to decide between a 50" and 42" HD Plasma. I have a small living room and the distance from the couch to the wall is just over 9'. The difference between the 2 sets I am looking at is $1,300 for the 42" and $1,800 for the 50". Which should I get?

At that distance, the 50 inch would just be overkill. 42 should be way more than enough, unless you're blind as a bat like me.

I think the 42 might be a better option unless anytime that you may be relocating where you'd have a bigger living room (or a big finishd basement) then the 50 could work.

Just my suggestion.

I just got mine Monday. This unit is fantastic...... Better than I hoped for . Free shipping and no tax......Discovery HD looks so fantastic on this baby, it is amazing. Even anlog chanells dont look too bad. Lots of inputs. 2 component and 1 HDMI as well. I have it in my livingroom and it looks fine (size wise) from 10 ft away. Looks bigger than I had imagined.

One of the best reviewed LCD on the market today. Do not let the name fool you. Once you start doing the research you will find that The Olivea name and Syntax brand are well respected.

Anyway I went with LCD over plasma for a couple of reasons. Price. Less heat output. No burn in. No bulb life to worry about other than the backlight. It is estimated to last at 8 hours a day on time for 17 years. Try and get that with plasma.

Anyway, I am not trying to change your mind I am just getting some more info out there.comparisons between LCD and Plasma

As big as you can afford.

I've got a 50" at about 12', and it's great. My wife is even ok with it, and she's not a big fan of "bigger is better".

At 9', the 50" is probably too big.

With a 50" you're gonna end up with eye fatigue from your eyes moving around so much.

I ended up buying the 42". I get it in 2-3 weeks. My friend runs an electronics shop and is giving me a great deal. It is a Philips that is $1,700 at Costco, Ebay and Pricegrabber. I am getting it with a flush wall mount and tax, delivered for $1,472 (CA tax is a lot.)

I might move in a couple years and if I need a bigger set at that time I'm sure the 50's will even be cheaper and I'll throw this in my bedroom. Thanks for the advice.
