Green desires Dolphins

Chiefs quarterback wants to go to Miami, and KC might grant him his wish with a trade to Florida.

By ADAM TEICHER

The Kansas City Star

Signs are mounting that the Chiefs will trade quarterback Trent Green to the Miami Dolphins.

A source indicated a deal between the Chiefs and Dolphins could be reached as soon as the annual NFL meetings, which begin Sunday in Phoenix.

But the possible trade was suddenly complicated by other developments
Friday. The Detroit Lions contacted the Chiefs this week and were interested in discussing a deal for Green.

Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson will meet with his Lions counterpart, Matt Millen, in Phoenix.

The Dolphins are also reportedly interested in Houston quarterback David Carr, who became expendable this week when the Texans traded for Matt Schaub. The Texans waived Carr on Friday.

The Chiefs granted Green, their starter for the last six seasons, permission to find a new home contingent on the Chiefs’ ability to reach agreement on trade terms with that team. The Chiefs and Dolphins have yet to reach that agreement.

Green’s agent, Jim Steiner, said Friday that Green’s preference was to play for Miami. The Dolphins are in need of a starting quarterback and run the same offensive system as the Chiefs.

Green has worked with Miami head coach Cam Cameron and quarterbacks coach Terry Shea and has credited both for advancing his career.

“That’s our intent,” Steiner said. “There’s a relationship there between Cam Cameron and Trent. They know each other from when they were together in Washington. So it would be a very good spot for Trent.”

It would also be necessary for Green to work out a new contract with Miami. They realistically wouldn’t accept his scheduled base salary of $7.2 million.

“That’s a nonissue,” Steiner said. “The clubs have to agree (on trade terms). I’m confident if the clubs can make a deal, then (Green and the Dolphins) can make a deal.”

Peterson met with Miami general manager Randy Mueller and Cameron this week in Knoxville, Tenn., where they were attending the University of Tennessee’s pro workout day.

Peterson said he would talk again with Mueller in Phoenix. He also indicated Green’s preference was to play for Miami.

“He has had discussions with Miami, more with Miami than any other place,” Peterson said. “He’s indicated that’s certainly a place he has a great deal of interest in. All things considered, that would be a natural place for him to be.

“It’s moving. But I would not in any way eliminate the possibility that if things don’t work out, we still want him here. It just can’t be at the compensation level he’s scheduled for this year.”

The Chiefs re-signed veteran quarterback Damon Huard last month just days before he was to become an unrestricted free agent.

They also have Brodie Croyle, drafted in the third round last year and a favorite of coach Herm Edwards.

Edwards has said the Chiefs may also draft another quarterback this year.

Green hasn’t said whether he would return to the Chiefs having to compete for the starting job with Huard and Croyle. Asked about that, Steiner said, “We’ll wait to see how everything shakes out before we comment on that.”

Detroit would also appear to be a logical landing place for Green. The Lions’ offensive coordinator is Mike Martz, who once worked with Green with the Rams.

Detroit also runs an identical offensive system. Steiner wouldn’t talk about Green’s interest in playing for the Lions.

“I haven’t spoken with Detroit,” Steiner said. “I have no way of knowing at this point that they are interested in Trent.”

The Chiefs are trying to find the best deal they can in return for Green. They are hopeful of collecting some extra draft picks.

They have only six this year. They traded their fourth-round choice to New Orleans in last year’s deal for running back Michael Bennett.
Green could be traded to Detroit or any other team without his permission, but that’s unlikely for a couple of reasons.

The first is his close friendship with Peterson. The second is that no team would realistically accept him under terms of his current contract.
At a news conference Friday in Miami, Cameron declined to answer questions about the status of a trade for Green.

Miami’s only experienced quarterback is Daunte Culpepper. Cameron said Culpepper is in rehabilitation after suffering a serious knee injury two seasons ago while playing for Minnesota.

I hope for Green's sake, he ends up in Miami.

But if he did go to Detroit, they could draft Thomas in the first, and still get a guy like Staley in the second, although he might end up a late first rounder.

Of course, Matt Millen will **** it up anyway.

Yeah, Millen is probably dumb enough to give us a 1st or 2nd for him.

He'd get killed quicker in Miami.

Detroit just signed Muiltalo, they have Damien Woody, Jeff Backus and Dominic Riaoloa - not great names, but solid lineman.

The Dolphins don't have anyone on their line.

The Lions play in a dome, with Martz and have some decent offensive pieces in place.
