Sorry..its offeason Chiefs news

RAND: No urgency to trade Green now
May 24, 2007, 6:35:56 AM by Jonathan Rand - FAQ

Trent Green’s lame-duck stay with the Chiefs likely will last a lot longer than he’d like.

The Chiefs and their two-time Pro Bowl quarterback don’t see eye to eye on terms of a divorce. The club permitted Green and his agent, Jim Steiner, to work out a deal with the Miami Dolphins, but the Chiefs want to make a trade and the Dolphins want to make a small donation.

Before the draft, the Dolphins offered for Green their second of two sixth-round picks, the 199th selection. That’s next to nothing, and for the Dolphins the only better result would be to get him for actually nothing. Perhaps they can, if they hold their cards and wait for the Chiefs to release Green rather than pay his $7.2 million salary. But the Chiefs have shown no inclination to do that.

The Chiefs can’t expect a huge return for a quarterback who may or may not be longer in their plans. But they understandably want to acquire a player who can make their roster in 2007. Before the draft, that might’ve meant a fourth-round pick. Now that means a competent backup.

Chiefs president Carl Peterson is obligated to strengthen his team, not make Green happy. He’s not doing his job if he virtually gives away Green as a reward for his past production and leadership.

Anybody in Green’s shoes would want to start his next job as soon as possible. But given his 13 years of NFL experience and familiarity with the type of offense the Dolphins are installing, he wouldn’t miss a beat if he first joined his new team in training camp.

Green says he feels awkward being around the Chiefs’ facilities, but keep in mind the off-season workouts he’s attending are strictly voluntary. His presence also is awkward for the Chiefs, a fact he and his agent no doubt considered when Green elected to take part in the OTAs. A little adverse publicity for the Chiefs can’t hurt Green’s cause, though it’s doubtful it will help much.

The Chiefs know full well that once Green’s situation is resolved, it will be as quickly forgotten as almost every other contract or trade dispute that pops up in the NFL every year.

Major moves in the NFL often get done because of deadlines, such as the draft, start of free agency or a fat roster bonus coming due. But with the draft over, the Chiefs face no deadlines with Green until almost opening day.

Perhaps the Dolphins will conclude it’s worth upping the ante to get Green in Miami and try to see if he more resembles the star of two years ago or the beleaguered passer of a year ago who struggled to regain his touch after suffering an opening-game concussion.

Green has no assurance that he’ll start for the Dolphins, though they’d surely like a veteran presence as they develop John Beck, their second-round pick out of Brigham Young. Daunte Culpepper, acquired to start for the Dolphins in 2006, hasn’t been healthy and isn’t expected to stick around.

So how long will the Green stalemate at Arrowhead linger? It’s anybody’s guess, though when the Titans and Steve McNair were in a comparable situation last summer, he wasn’t traded to the Ravens until June 8. And keep in mind that the Ravens needed McNair worse than the Dolphins appear to need Green.

So is Peterson just posturing when he says he could see Green playing for the Chiefs in 2007? Not entirely.

The most likely outcome is that the Chiefs send Green to Miami for less than they consider fair value. But it’s also possible these negotiations drag on to where coach Herm Edwards gets dubious about playing Brodie Croyle this year and Green seems sharper than Damon Huard. If Green appears the best quarterback still around, maybe he doesn’t go anywhere.

They said on the radio yesterday, Green was terrible in OTAs. Of course that could be on purpose

Well, this one is from the Chiefs organization, so it does make it somewhat interesting to see their perspective (not that we didn't already know it).

I agree with this and feel that accepting a nothing pick is really a disrespect to Trent also. I can totally understand Trent's frustration but this whole thing is normal and typical football business.

Bullshit. Everyone knows that the Chiefs will become a pariah in the league and it will be a generation before they're able to attract and keep free agents again. For example, look how the Lawyer Milloy situation completely destroyed the Patriots. You'd think Carl would learn.
