McCain and the liberal block on the Supreme Court.
I mentioned this in another thread. But it bears its own topic.
McCain, when asked at the religious debate thingy which SC justice he would not have nominated. McCain's answered not one, but four: Stevens, Ginsburg, Bryer, and Souter. Now, Stevens was nominated before McCain came to the Senate. But not the other three. Ginsburg: Yea. Breyer: Yea. Souter: Yea. Has McCain seen the light, and now realizes these folks are EVILLL. Or has he flip flopped. Discuss. |

Good catch.
I'd say it's typical McCain. |

He said whatever was going to get him applause.
He also said Osama bin Laden believes the main battlefield in the War on Terror is Baghdad. He said a few really retarded things that nobody seems to care about. |

"Wouldn't have nominated" just means he would have chosen someone else if it were his choice. Voting to confirm them means he saw no reason to oppose their confirmation.
The confirmation process is not supposed to be political. It's ironic that liberals sneer at McCain for not making the process about politics and voting against those people on ideological grounds. He sounds more like a different kind of politician than the finger-puppet they're running out there these days. Moderate as he may be, you'd have to be a pretty big party hack to believe McCain really would have nominated Ginsburg, who makes Chairman Mao look like Ronald Reagan.

That kind of sabre rattling is only going to make things worse. We don't want to offend Pakistan and provoke a conflict. Maybe we should talk to them?

Just someone who favors the common sense policy we've had of talking to Pakistan and making sure we understand each other. It's borne so much fruit, I don't know how anyone could argue for anything else.

John McCain doesn't seem to see it that way. He seem to understand that when the public elects a president they are vesting him with the authority to choose justices and doesn't politicize the confirmation process by Borking every nominee.
