But seriously do you actually really think this is useless?

Then please by all means tell us why you think it's useless.

You see I can come up with many reasons of why research in this is not only useful but vital.

First studying the flight mechanisms of birds, you have what a billion years of natural selection in making a successful flight mechanism. Think that nature hasn't done something right and we have nothing to learn?

Second you do understand the value of light weight flight research right? UAVs that can loiter for days. Solar powered aircraft that don't need traditional power sources to fly.

Really just because you don't understand it, that doesn't make it useless.
