New Modem...Well Maybe.

So my Motorola modem, courtesy of AT&T, shot craps last night.
I got up, called them and was pleasantly greeted with news that it was freshly out of warranty.
Much to my chagrin, I went and bought a new one on my lunch hour.

I get home from work...And what do you know...the old one's working again.

I know I can take the newly-purchased modem back to Best Buy, but will they take the 2-year protection plan I bought for it back?

I'm almost wary of the "all is well" old modem though.
Suppose this is just an intermittent functional spell?

Thoughts?

Tell me about it.

Those ****ers have U-Verse prominently on display at the Mill Street store.
3 blocks away though, where I live, they don't offer the service. Seriously?

Why are you buying your own modem? They should supply that for you and replace it if it's broken.

Negative Ghostrider.

I was told my warranty was out as of last June and that I had to buy a new one.

Mind you, this is the 2nd modem I've purchased.
For the same functional failure.

that's.....actually surprising.

are they coming to your neighborhood anytime soon?

the way i take it att is only putting uverse where there is lots of population. so, smaller cities, towns, etc won't have it anytime soon.

that's the reason that the cable co.'s sometimes is a better option. and yes, i know, the majority of CP hates the cable co.'s

You should not have to purchase your own modem. It should be part of the plan. I guess I've never had AT&T, but any provider I've ever known provides the hardware.

Then you don't worry about any warranty. They own the hardware. It's their warranty for their hardware and they have to deal with it. In the mean-time, they need to get you, their customer, some new hardware so you can continue to use their service and pay them money.

Did you have an option to buy your own or something, and just took that to try and save money on the monthly bill, maybe..??

I bet they'll refund that extended plan. My guess is that if you can still return the merchandise you can get that back as well.

I always have to either buy or rent the modem. Never had it provided for free. That's through Qwest which is now CenturyLink

Ok, well yeah, rent the modem. I wasn't implying it was free, but that they usually provide and charge a small amount each month for it. What's that save ya, $12/year?

Even if it was $5/mo, which I doubt it is, it sounds like you're buying a new one every year anyway, which is probably still more expensive.

Yeah it was. I was excited to see the service available in Midtown, but when I inquired they said I couldn't get it where I live (which is approximately 3 blocks away from the store).

They told me plainly my modem was not covered and that I was no longer covered by the warranty for the device. I was told my only option was to purchase a new modem. Either directly from AT&T or from a retailer like Best Buy.

I think they charge me $8/mo, so it's pretty much the same as buying over time. Though i haven't had any problems with mine crapping out. The dog peed on one and it stopped working, but that's totally my fault for having it on the floor.

Might be a blessing in disguise. I keep hearing shady stuff about AT&T. A buddy of mine just got all switched over from TW because he wanted to record 4 channels at a time.

They get him all setup, he starts setting up recordings on his box, and gets all kinds of warnings that he can't record even two things at a time.

He calls them to ask what's going on with that and that's when they inform him that, oh, you can't record more than 1 HD channel at a time. The others will have to be standard.

Now he wishes he'd have never switched.

$8/mo modem charge is ridiculous. Do you have TW or Comcast available where you're at? Why are you so stuck to AT&T?
