Harrison Smith in Rd 2
I haven't seen any posts or threads about this Harrison Smith kid out of Notre Dame. Michael Lombardi on NFLN interviewed him this weekend and he seemed like a smart enough kid and seems to be the #2 prospect in the draft at Safety. He's projected as an early to mid R2 pick.
Assuming we aren't taking Barron in the first through some trade-down arrangement, what are your thoughts on taking Harrison Smith with our R2 pick? A mock on Fox Sports has Dallas taking him right after us in the second. So he'd probably be available there. The scouting report says he has some weakness in man coverage, so maybe he's not a good fit for our scheme. I like that he's good in run support since Lewis and our other safeties not named Berry were pretty bad in that area. He's also a captain. I think we'll add safety depth/talent somewhere in the draft, but I don't think it'll be in the first round. This is a very intriguing player. From what I've read most football people think he can play either safety spot. I agree we'll take at least one safety, question is how early. No more McGraw and Piscitelli or Langford please.

I'd rather take Ta'amu in that spot and go with Brandon Taylor out of LSU in the 3rd.
But I wouldn't ultimately be angry with Smith in the 2nd. He's a nice fit and a good player. I just think the combination of Taylor and Ta'amu would be better than the combination of Smith and Chapman.

Draft guys seem to be either pretty high on Ta'amu or fairly cold. Most say mid-second round or 3rd from the few sites I've looked at. It just seems like our second rounder would be a bit of a reach for him, though if we are convinced he's the answer at NT he'd be a better pick than another safety for sure. Whereas Smith is being pushed into the late-first by some and seems like he'd be a better value at #44 than Ta'amu.
That said, I'm going to check out Taylor and see what he's got. |

Taylor had a pretty bad game against Richardson from the looks of it, though I'm sure he's not the only one who's looked bad against that guy.
I think I'd go in a different direction than Taylor in the third, but I get your point DJ.. assuming the Chiefs feel that S and NT both have to be addressed in this draft then: Ta'amu+Taylor > Smith+Chapman |

Pro Football Weekly has Harrison going in the bottom of the first while rating Taylor as a top of the 6th round pick. I used their draft value chart last year tracking the draft and I think they were probably about 80 to 90 percent right on their rankings. They'll have another chart out before the draft so I'll see where they change any of the rankings.
