Mahomes 4th quarter playoff performances vs former Chief QBs

Many of us remember what it was like to have to count on DeBerg/Kreig/Bono/Grbac/Cassell in the playoffs in the fourth quarter. That group of QBs put up a total of 10 points in seven playoff fourth quarters. That’s obviously a horror show, even without the context of what we just witnessed with Mahomes.

When Pat threw the second pick, I looked at the time and realized that we could get three more possessions if the D could prevent any long drives. I was amazed at how confident I felt that Pat would overcome the deficit even if the D gave up another score, and posted in the GT that we'd get 21 (board was understandably melting down, maybe exaggerated a little).

So after putting up 21 points in a little over seven minutes to close the game, I thought it would be interesting to compare Mahomes to former Chiefs’ QBs in playoff game fourth quarters to see if my reversal in confidence was well founded.

In 5 playoff games, Pat has averaged 15.2 points in the 4th quarter, and has yet to be outscored, with a 76-27 (this year 45-7) advantage overall. As Clark Griswold would say, that's nearly 3-to-1 to you and me Russ.

Pre-Mahomes, in 20 games Chief offenses scored 94 total points for a 4.7 average. Not terrible (3.8 ex-Montana, who averaged 8.8). So Pat also has a 3-to-1 advantage over the former Chiefs. Overall in 20 games the former Chiefs were outscored 138-94 in the fourth. At their worst, in six of the seven games from 1993 to 2006 they were shutout, and outscored 31-7 overall.

As a bonus notice the D this year gave up 0,7, and 0 in the three games, while former Chiefs defenses were giving up 7 per game on average! So the ratio of defensive improvement matches the offense.

Here are the results and QBs by year with fourth quarter scores, Chiefs-opponents. How great is it to have THAT GUY, like the GOAT Montana in his prime, where you just know he will, as Pat says, "do something special" in the clutch moments?! I’m just hoping Caracosa gives this thread an…okay!
