Veterans Day

I know BRC has a thread somewhere here he bumps or start each year but thought I would throw another out there.

In honor of Veterans Day I've been watching documentaries this week on different eras of conflict.

Watched a documentary on Somalia earlier and watching Vietnam in HD right now.

Tomorrow I plan to watch "The Outpost" a movie about Combat Out Post (COP) Keating In Afghanistan that was almost overran in 2009, the ensuing battle resulted in 2 Medals Of Honor awarded, a Distinguished Service Cross and dozens of other medals for valor. 8 Americans were killed dozens wounded and an estimated 300 Taliban killed. (Also called the battle of Kamdesh) You can rent this on Netflix, Amazon Prime and most streaming services.

We have a ton of veterans here Mac, Cheater 5, Warrior, Randal, GloryDayze, Frazod, hell no way I can remember them all so I wont attempt to name them and didn't omit anyone purposefully.

Anyway Happy Veterans Day for all of you who raised your right hand. The older I get the more reflective I get on this day and think about the brothers I have and the ones I've lost.

Thanks so much! We all appreciate it. If I might, since you are currently watching the "history" of Viet Nam, that you check out a film called "Hamburger Hill". It is a very good drama about the hell that we went through as members of the 101st Screaming Eagles in the A Shau Valley in May '69. It is about as "true" a depiction as I have seen. 95% of it is exactly as it was.

Again, thanks so much!

I've watched it probably 5X Randal. Turns my stomach every time they take friendly fire from the birds after they have the hill taken. Had a friend killed by friendly fire in the Gulf War.

Thank you for your service. My Dad is Vietnam Veteran, was a crew chief on Cobras and also got to fly some door gunner on Hueys now and again.

Grandfather and his brother were WWII vets, Grandfather was a medic and was at Battle of the Bulge, my grandmother is a war bride from Belgium. His brother was Marine in the pacific.

Great Great Grandfather was an officer in the Civil War.

Nephew is in the Airforce and just got back from Turkey. I could go on but you get the point.

USAF veteran. I can appreciate it when people thank me for my service, but my service wasn't anything spectacular. One thing most people don't appreciate about veterans though, is the fact that many/most of us have lost friends in combat or accidents. I stopped counting when 10 people I knew had been killed in accidents. Losing friends is one of the most difficult parts of serving. When you thank people for their service, it's probably a good idea to express condolences for any friends that they've lost too.

There is absolutely nothing I know of that can teach you the same everlasting, rewarding lessons about yourself and the world around you than military service

One way or another you're coming out of it a better, more well rounded person

Happy Veterans day to all of my fellow Veterans.

As RedinTexas says my service was really not that extraordinary. I spent 6 years in the Navy 3 on shore and 3 at sea. The closest I came to doing anything heroic was fighting a fire on a small cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman. We came upon it on our way to the Persian Gulf.

I always like these threads each year; may I propose those who served list their assignment/duty station? That's the part that always fascinates me. and as a veteran, I also appreciate these threads and the 'thank yous' in here. :THUMB:

Deployed to Afghanistan during OEF. Served as a line-medic for a light infantry Battalion. Our operations took place in Kherwar/Kharwar in the Logar province of Eastern Afghanistan. While our experiences weren't on par with The Outpost, during periods of good weather (Spring - Fall), we were in contact with the Taliban almost daily between patrol and COP attack firefights. Got a picture of myself, and one cool shot of someone manning the Mk.19 grenade launcher during a firefight while a tornado was going off.
