Chiefs TE Travis Kelce adds another incredible accomplishment to resume

On behalf of Chiefs' Kingdom and all of KC: "We love you Travador!"

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce adds another incredible accomplishment to resume

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is already one of the most decorated players to ever play the position, and he keeps adding to his Hall of Fame resume.

With a 27-yard catch in Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Kelce became just the fourth tight end in NFL history to top the 11,000 yard receiving mark, while also becoming the fastest player to ever reach that milestone at the position.

Tony Gonzalez (15,127), Jason Witten (13,036) and Antonio Gates (11,841) are the only three tight ends ahead of him for yardage on the all-time list.

It is possible — though unlikely — that he could pass Gates at some point this season, but with only six games to play after Sunday that would be a tall task.

It took Kelce just 154 games to reach the 11,000-yard mark.

Gonzalez was the previous fastest to reach the mark, doing so in 191 games.

Kelce just turned 34 earlier this season and might not have enough seasons to catch Gonzalez for the all-time yardage mark among tight ends, but he is also not showing any signs of slowing down.

His 2022 season was the second-best of his career with 1,338 yards. He entered Sunday's game on pace for 1,210 yards if he played a full 17-game schedule.

Kelce has always been a favorite target of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but given how little production the team is getting from their wide receivers Kelce is taking on an even bigger role within the offense.

I feel like Kelce passing Tony G really comes down to how bad he wants to.

Let’s say Kelce ends this year with another 500 yards. That gets him to roughly 11,600.

That puts him 3,500 behind Tony G.

4 seasons averaging around 900 yards gets him there. He can absolutely do that if he stays healthy. Basically 2 more seasons of 1,000+ then two true decline seasons.

Would be incredible but possible.

Kelce also probably ends up third all time in TDs by a TE.

Gates: 116
Gonzalez: 111
Gronk: 92
Graham: 86
Kelce/Witten: 74

I always forget how good Jimmy Graham was for awhile there too.

This might be a stupid question, but are they including playoff game numbers in there?

Because sometimes they don’t when they talk about career numbers and then give a different stat for including playoffs

Reg Season only

Edit: He would have another 1550 yards and 16 TD's if you included his career playoff games.

That’s in only 18 games.

If you take those averages back to a make 17 games season, his postseason numbers are:

125 catches
1462 yards
15 touchdowns

The single season receiving record for a TE is 1,416 (Kelce 2020)
The single season receptions record for a TE is 116 (Ertz 2018)
The single season touchdown record for a TE is 18 (Gronk 2011)

Kelce’s postseason numbers would be the greatest regular season by a tight end ever.

Phew - taking 1,000 yard seasons from a 35 and 36 year old TE as an article of faith is sure asking a lot. Tony G never had a 1,000 yard season past 32. Witten never past 30. Sharp retired at 35.

Best I can find there been seven 1,000 yard seasons for a TE after his age 30 season. 3 of those were by Kelce (31, 32 and 33), 2 by Gonzales (31 and 32) Olsen had one at 31 and completely out of nowhere, Delanie Walker at 31.

Granted, the fact that Kelce is already shattering these longevity records pretty routinely helps the argument, but I think we can all acknowledge that he's lost a step this year. Hell, most of us noted that he'd lost one last season.

To get there I think you're looking at 5 more seasons. That's through his age 39 season - Jason Witten went out there at 38 and put up 70 yards through 16 games. I mean at a point there's a threshhold level of ability you need to even have a 30 yard day and I don't think it's likely that Travis is at that level at 39 years old. Those guys just take such a pounding.

It’s hard to use history as a predictor for Kelce, because he is historically unique.

The part that we don’t bring up enough though is how close Kelce is despite the headstart that Tony G had.

Kelce was a 24 year old rookie in 2013. He got hurt and played his first full season at 25.

Tony was a 21 year old rookie in 1997. He never missed more than 1 game in a season his entire 17-year career.
