I read this article too and this was my impression. Another doubter that wants to see the Royals tank it becuase it would prove him and so many other people wrong. I saved this article and will be sending it back to this punk when we win the AL Central and make the playoffs.

You really think Neyer want's the Royals to lose? I don't - He's just a pessimist. The guy has been a fan of the Royals for the last 20 years, I think he'd be thrilled if they won. And for the most part he's right. The Royals do need another bat and Baird shouldn't be relaxing.

Neyer is a die-hard Royals fan but it is his job to point out the obvious. If you look at the numbers you will see what he means.
If you look at the numbers, the Royals should only be a .500 team. I think that is what makes this team and this season special.

If he is such a die hard I would think he would find more positive things to write about. There is far more positive then negative on this team. Why point out every weakness instead of writing about the strengths. Why? The answer would seem to be that writers and newcasters forgot long ago that a heartwarming story can see newspapers and airtime as well. Look at your local news, how often do they lead with something positive? |

He talked about positives, but again - Neyer is a pessimist (Rany is the optimist). He says the team is for real. He talks about Berroa and Relaford playing well. He also mentions that the team has a lot of holes - which it does. The column is nothing more then a general assesment of the team and its pretty accurate. I don't think he's interested in being proven right and there aren't many claims that he can be proven right about.
And don't forget - this is the same guy who just wrote "I want to be happy about this season even if the Royals don't finish in first place, because they've already done so much better than I thought they could do. But now we're rapidly approaching a point -- a seven-game lead at the end of July would definitely be that point -- at which I'll be terribly disappointed if they don't win. This is the year, buddy. There are positive signs for the future, I suppose, especially considering the Indians probably won't hit their stride until 2005 or thereabouts. But this is the year. I might get hit by a bus in November, so I don't want to think about the future. I want to win now." |
