That wasn't the hood. (depending on when you grew up). That's my old area... We moved out that way coming from the "real hood" (31st & cypress) in the mid 80's. I was one of 3 black people in my entire 6th grade class at Dobbs.

I spent 10 years of my life at 87th and Blue ridge. I thought it was a good neighboorhood. But, it started going downhill and we had to pack it up and move to Lees Summit.

That's how my parents viewed it, and I've since met several people from way back then who said they did the same... most of them either went north or to Lee's Summit.

Yeah, I know where you lived... I lived right around the corner from you (90th & Laurel down by Elm). Neighborhood had one other black kid in it now it's gone to shit really quick.

My old stompin grounds. My first job was at the Milgrams (used to be Reiders) at Loma Vista shopping center. I grew up on about 60 acres west of I-435 on 87th. Of course this is before there was an I-435 there. That area has really changed. I remember when Dobbs was being built as well as all the homes between 87th and 95th, from Blue Ridge to James A. Reed.

Ah, memories.

My stomping grounds as well. I went to O'Hara HS, so all of my friends lived in that area. I lived by the Clark Ketterman baseball fields, just barely out of the Ruskin area.

I know, bad joke.... it's like when people here call downtown dangerous. I wasn't close to being in the minority there, yet there was still a pretty big difference from the Northland... and not so much black/white, but reports at Ervin of kids getting their arms broken while being thrown into lockers and what not, which was unheard of in the PH district at the time (well, middle school, anyway). I started kindergarten at Dobbs in '85.... I think the principal was Virginia Brown? She was roughly 174 years old.

Yeah... that brown ass wig. Mr. Bonoit ( I think that's his name) later became principle. (Bald with beard) Mr Anderson was my 6th grade teacher.

I bet I know who that is. A buddy of mine started teaching at Ruskin then Hickman in about 72 or 73 - somewhere around there. Taught Biology and science classes. He was fresh out of college and yeah, was starting to go bald. I thought he spelled his name "Benyo" but he may have done that so it would be pronounced correctly.

This thread is nostaligic.

This thread does bring back memories... I lived behind O'Hara, within walking distance of Dobbs, Broadview Christian Church, Robandee... Went to Annie's Santa Fe in Bannister Mall quite a bit with my parents...

I grew up around that area too (Behind Truman Elementary, in that area between Bannister Road and East 99th St. along James A. Reed). I am only 26 and live out in Raytown now and there is no way I would go to Hickman High again (graduated in 2001)....joke of a High School and from the sound of it a soon to be canned high school.

I agree with wutamess saying that Raytown is next on the chopping blocks.
