Chiefs Wimbley Gone

A day after missing out on Peyton Manning, the Tennessee Titans instead, reportedly, made a move to bolster their defense on Tuesday.

Hoping to improve their pass rush, the Titans agreed to a five-year, $35 million contract with defensive end Kamerion Wimbley, according to multiple reports.

According to The Tennessean and Scout.com, Wimbley receives $13.5 million guaranteed in the pact.

Tennessee finished with 28 quarterback sacks last season. Only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with 23, had fewer sacks.

The 28-year-old Wimbley was an effective pass rusher in his two seasons with the Oakland Raiders, totaling 16 sacks. He had seven sacks last season.

The Raiders released Wimbley last week, just one year into a $48 million, five-year deal in the latest cost-cutting move by the franchise under new general manager Reggie McKenzie.

Oakland gave Wimbley the big contract last summer instead of allowing him to play on an $11.3 million franchise tender. He got paid $5 million in 2011 under the restructured deal and is still guaranteed an additional $6.5 million from the Raiders even after he signs with another team. The Raiders would have been on the hook for $4.5 million more in 2012 if Wimbley was on the roster Saturday, as well as an additional $13 million in guaranteed money for the rest of the deal, which led to the decision to let him go.

He has experience playing outside linebacker and defensive end in 4-3 alignments, as well as outside linebacker in 3-4 systems.

Wimbley was a first-round pick of Cleveland in 2006 and had 26.5 sacks in four seasons before being dealt to Oakland in March 2010 for a third-round draft pick.

I expected him to get a nice chunk of change.
Would've been nice, but there will be pass-rushers available in the Draft.

Depends on if we bring Gilberry back.
If we do...He, Hali, Houston and Bailey will provide a pretty potent pass-rush.

I just think our pass rush isn't good enough. Out of those 3, only Hali you know for sure will bring a great pass rush.

Gilberry took a step back in the pass rush dept last year and Houston only came on in the 2nd half of the season. I like Justin but he is by no means a given.

Plus it's like our Safety position. Imagine if we have an injury. Then we're screwed.

I think it'd be wise to select a pass rusher early.

I think Houston was consistent down the stretch and will only improve.
He'll be a reliable pass-rusher this season. Will his numbers balloon? That remains to be seen, but I think it's safe to say he'll bring consistent pressure.

Bailey improved as the season wore on as well. Hopefully he'll continue to get better and we'll see more of a contribution from him.

Gilberry got there often...just didn't finish as effectively as he had in the past.

Don't forget about Amon Gordon. He had some success at getting to the QB last year as well.

I'm all for us taking someone who can bolster the pass-rush though.

You're correct. It isn't good enough. especially now with Manning in Denver.

Yes, Peyton Manning. and if there's the SLIGHT hint of Drew Brees leaving NO's, I'll fully expect "Drew Brees" to be the new takeover post.
