While the Chiefs were busy wooing Winston over BBQ, Chiefs fans used Winston’s Twitter handle (@EricWinston) as a recruiting tool.

“Oh man, I tell you what, that was something else,” Winston said. “My Twitter blew up obviously when I was released and got a lot of messages from a lot of people. I feel like the fans from Kansas City probably blew it up five times more than anyone else’s fan base.

“Every day, it was, ‘Come to Kansas City. Come to Kansas City,’ and then obviously when it was made known that I was in town, I had hundreds of mentions every day. To give you an idea of what that is, I usually have 50 or 75 mentions after a big game, and every day, just random mentions by all the fans, hundreds of them. I was really taken aback.”

When word broke that Winston was headed to Kansas City, hugs and cheers erupted at the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Westport. It was a celebration unparallel for the signing of an offensive lineman.

Chiefs fans, much like the team’s front office, viewed Winston as one of free agency’s biggest prizes.

“I told one of the interns on the way in to go to the facility, ‘These fans around here mean business. They’re blowing my Twitter up,’ and I loved it,” Winston said. “I thought it was really cool and I thought it was great that they were so into it and that they knew everything that was going on and they actually knew who I was and what they felt like I could do.
