Pokemon Go: Augmented Reality (AR) Game For Your Smart Phone
To Be The Very Best: Pokémon Enters Into Augmented Reality
Gabriel Rosenberg Halfway through your walk to school, a wild Charmander appears. Just a few throws of a Pokéball, and it could be yours. Will you stop to catch it? Nintendo is betting you will. Not just that, they're betting that you've waited most of your life to see a Pokémon in the real world. Pokémon Go — the upcoming iOS and Android app from Nintendo, The Pokémon Co., and developer Niantic Labs — promises to let anyone with a smart phone "find" and train the diverse creatures of Pokémon all around them. For aspiring Trainers, it could be an entirely new way to interact with a now 20-year-old franchise. For these companies, though, Pokémon Go — which launches for free sometime in July — offers the biggest opportunity yet to bring augmented reality into the mainstream, a chance to prove not only that AR technology is ready for people, but that people are ready for AR. http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechc...-the-very-best I thought it was an interesting idea, AR rather than VR. I've seen lots of apps that kind of do this already-mostly playing with pictures to add makeup or special effects. I'm not fond of the Pokemon craze but a Google Maps type of integration and ( I assume) a way of monetizing the app by opening it up to sponsored locations sounds intriguing. |

A few years ago the power went out in our section of town. I called and they told me that it would be a 24 hour outage. No biggie. I have oil lamps and the fridge wasn't loaded up very heavy. I figured we all had books we could read. When I got off the phone with the power company I went in to my teen son's room to let him know what was going on. After 15-20 minutes without power he had already completed a cardboard suit or armor and was working on his weps. He had markers set out and had already drawn out what he wanted for the heraldry on the shield. |

My girl played the game like crazy for a few days. One day she legit made me drive her around to find some rare Pokemon and another day she made me take her to the beach to find some water types. Thankfully she's slowed down a bit because she says the app sucks, but she's fine as hell and has no shame. My best friend also has no shame in the fact that she's obsessed with the game and she's fine as hell too. Tons of good looking girls playing this game. |

Yes, doing better than you were is great until you learn that you're not doing as good as you could. Slowly walking and pausing does not get your heart rate up. It's not "effective" exercise. Someone was comparing this game as being better than the NFL's Play 60 program, the goal of which isn't just to get kids outside, it's to get them outside and healthy. I like the game. But I guess I'm just too stupid to believe the hype that this game is better for kids than programs designed to get kids healthy. It's a start, but it's not more effective.

It's possible for something to be a good thing and still be subject to jest. Like being a vegan or crossfit, those can be great things for people, but open to baseless ridicule all the same.

True. And I'm not trying to ridicule the game at all. I really like it a lot. I just think some people are over rating an aspect or two. I guess thinking that makes me stupid. Oh well. I'm done with that "argument" anyway. I didn't even think my opinion would get people so friggin' defensive.

The bolded part of your post makes me really, really sad. The laziness you describe as natural is a learned behavior. It's not the children's fault, it's the parents'. Technology has made parents lazy. Therefore, their children are lazy. They rely on TV/tablet/computer/phone to get their children "out of their hair". I remember when swing sets were in nearly every backyard. When my mom was trying to get stuff done, she would give us toys until we were old enough to have us go outside. I lived at the park or on my bike when I was a kid. My mom had to force me to come home when the street lights came on. (I'm sounding so old right now.) Now, it's gotten to a point where we're trying to use the same technology that made kids lazy to make them active? So, so sad. |

I think another part of the lack of exercise for kids is the fear so many parents have about "stranger danger". They became so afraid for the safety of the kids that they didn't want them outside out of their sight.
Not saying that is the problem, just a portion of it. But of course parents have been moaning about kids and technology since the boob tube was invented and wound up in every household. |
