I'd want to be damn sure that he and Smith are in lockstep on their reads before I made that switch as we already know that Smith and Wilson have solid chemistry.
You can put Streater outside with Maclin in the slot.

Just depends on how you utilize the slot WR.

If you're going to use him like Bobby Wade, Conley's stride length doesn't work because his routes just can't be precise enough (that would be Hill's forte). If you're going to use him like Victor Cruz, OTOH, you can get by with it.

It just depends on how you want to scheme. I don't think Conley works as a 'conventional' slot receiver, but there are ways to make him function well inside. I just don't think those ways jibe with how Reid likes to use the WCO.

Man...how did I whiff there?

But no, I don't think you can put Maclin in the slot. He's way too critical as the Z in this offense.

Reid uses his Z as a 'do everything' route runner. It's pretty much the position that he builds his route concepts around.

I think that's a complete non-starter.

Maclin can play anywhere and still be a #1 type guy

Not sure why Hill hasn't gotten more play at receiver in the preseason.

I'm not a fan of this "hiding a player" in preseason crap. Repetition is much more important for the offensive player than the surprise factor. The surprise only last for the 1st half of the 1st game.

If Robinson just not ready?

Sure he can.

But nobody else on the roster can.

If you make Maclin the Y (full time slot), you have nobody left that can provide you the experience, intelligence and versatility that the Z in this offense requires.

Moving Maclin to the slot would be similar to moving Fisher to LG. You simply don't have any way to backfill effectively for him.

I assume that Andy would only move Maclin to make room for a WR who can play one position well but not the other yet.

You don't move Maclin if you have nobody to fill in

I think Streater is an outside only guy. Moving Maclin to the slot would allow Conley and Streater to play the outside.

Just an assumption on my part.

Conley is turning into a Maclin clone which bodes well for us.

I just think folks are underestimating everything we ask Maclin to do where he is.

He could literally be asked to line up anywhere on the field on any given play. We really don't do much of that with the other receivers; it's something of a design feature of Reid's system.

That's what made him such a brilliant acquisition (and why people that thought he was just another Bowe were reeruns). His versatility is precisely what makes this passing offense work. Without it, we're really stuck trying to hammer some square pegs into round holes or outright dropping some of our formations.

Now if we had another guy like Maclin, it would be a worthwhile experiment, but if that were the case - why not just put THAT guy in the slot? No sense in dicking with the guy that's done this for 5 years now.

Conley will be fun to watch develop but man, he has a long way to go to be as intuitive and as precise as J-Mac.

Since it looks like the Offense might have to carry the defense a bit this year, does anyone think Jah Reid should be starting at guard so Ehinger can spend a year getting stronger? Reid played pretty well in the playoffs.

That might not be a bad idea seeing how Ehinger got abused last week. I had suggested Fulton, but was shot down because he is not athletic enough. Reid may be a better option. I forgot about him playing guard last year.
